Where to stay - downtown or Marietta?

Our family is visting Atlanta for two purposes - to see some relatives that live in Marietta and to visit a couple of attractions - defnitiely Six Flags and probably Coca Cola, maybe CNN or Olympic park. Trying to decide whether to stay in Marietta or downtown - kind of want the downtown flavor, but we%26#39;re concerned about parking and costs, and driving back up to see relatives at night. If we stayed in Marietta, how difficult is it to get to the attractions downtown? Thanks

It is very easy to get downtown on I-75. Atlanta does not have a charming downtown like many cities where you can walk everywhere and find all kinds of restaurants and cafes. If you stay in a motel near the Cumberland Mall area which is where I-75 and I-285 cross, you will be close to Marietta and Six Flags. The attractions downtown are easy to get to off the interstate.

you will love staying in mariettta, or mayretta as the locals refer to it. the standing lewis grizzard dirrections on how to find marietta still apply...';go to the big chicken and turn left';. all of atlanta is easily accessable plus save a few dollars and enjoy the local flavor. marietta has a lot to offer by itself too. check it out, you%26#39;ll be impressed. and by all means please!!! let us know how you enjoyed your visit.

Bbqman is right. Be sure to check out the Marietta square. That is where you can get the flavor of a Southern city that you might be imagining. The old neigborhoods around the square are pretty too.

Thanks for the quick response! I%26#39;ve been looking into Marietta hotels - we like the suite hotels - I see that reviewers on Tripadvisor like Drury Inn and Crestwood , althogh we%26#39;re willing to pay for a good location and safety - I%26#39;ll keep looking, but if you have any advice, let me know!

I stay at the Sheraton Galleria hotel several times a year. The address is technically Atlanta but you are really very near Smyrna. It would be a good base for what you want to do. It is all suites with a living room and separate bedroom.

If your goal is to be near the downtown sites, you could always stay in midtown and take MARTA to the aquarium, etc. Midtown does have that ';city feel'; with lots of restaurants, bars, coffee shops and shopping within walking distance. It also had the fabulous Fox Theater and Piedmont Park, which is lovely especially on a sunny day. Marietta%26#39;s square area is quaint and there are very interesting historical sites, but to me the rest, while generally very nice, has a suburban feel. There are very few areas that are ';walkable.'; If it%26#39;s the city you%26#39;re looking for, I%26#39;d suggest midtown. However, you expressed concern about parking so I will warn you that most hotels charge you for overnight parking (up to $20 a night). Most areas have surface lots and garages nearby that offer cheaper rates ($5-8 a day), but that is certainly a consideration.

Depending on the weather, be sure to check out White Water and American Adventures. It%26#39;s in Marietta just north of the Big Chicken on Highway 41. Little kids will love American Adventures. Lots of kiddie rides. White Water will be fun for adults and kids of all ages. I%26#39;m not sure when you%26#39;ll be here or exactly when they open, but I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have lots of fun.

If you stay in Marietta the Sheraton Galleria is an excellent spot as is the ';Rennaisance'; Waverly Hotel across the street.

DO NOT stay in any of the hotels around the Delk Rd and I-75 area. Nor the Windy Hill area and I-75.

There are nice spots around ';Town Center Mall'; and Barrett Parkway or around the I-75 and Chastain rd area. Atlanta is a straight shot down I-75.

I agree with Roswellmom and Kickstart. Good advice. I am originally from Cobb County, by the way.

Hey Reinarubia - Did you go to school with Julia Roberts? I grew up in Buckhead. Went to Northside High School - Class of %26#39;74. The most famous student from Northside High School was Ru Paul (female impersonater)
