Church for Easter Sunday

My husband %26amp; I enjoy attending church services in the different places we travel. We will be in Savannah on Easter Sunday. We are looking for a church that conveys the feeling of the South with a fine organ and choir. I am an Episcopalian and my husband is a Congregationalist but we enjoy experiencing other denominations.

I am guessing that you will be staying in the Historic District. If so, the list of Historic churches in that area is long and the buildings and organs are just great! Most have web sites so you can read about their history and see what they look like.

Christ Episcopal Church. John Wesley and his brother, Charles, both worked here. It%26#39;s having a little problem right now as to what diocese it wants to belong to, but I understand the services follow the traditional old prayerbook.

St. Johns Episcopal Church. Another historic building.

Wesley Monumental - Methodist

Trinity Methodist ';

Independent Presbyterian

First Baptist

Lutheran Church of the Ascension - fantastic organ

First African Baptist - first in the area for slaves and freed blacks

The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist - Catholic

There are others, but these are the ones that have the beautiful and historic buildings.

You may be interested.....when Savannah was first laid out, one lot on each square was reserved for a house of worship. Most of the ones that I listed are on the those locations.

Be sure to check out the Cathedral, even if you don%26#39;t make it for services. It is beautiful!

We also enjoy attending church on our travels, and have been to Indepent Pres in Savannah on two trips and Christ Episcopal on three trips. Our last time at Christ Episcopal was Palm Sunday three years ago and it was packed. . . but wonderful! I don%26#39;t think you can go wrong with any of the churches in the historic district--we were warmly welcomed each time.

Christ Church is the Mother Church of Georgia. It%26#39;%26#39;s on Johnson Square, the first one laid out in 1733....congregation dates back to the same day that the colony was founded: Feb. 12, 1733.

Right now there is a split between the more liberal faction and not-so-liberal...but services continue on Johnson Sq. I think they have 2 services on Easter: 8am with the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the 10:30 service with the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, Rite 1.

St. John%26#39;s Episcopal Church on Madison Sq. uses only the 1928 Book of Common Prayer , with 3 services on Easter, but I don%26#39;t know the schedule other than the 8am (first) service.

I suggest that you decide which church you wish to visit, then check its web site or call the church office for more info.

Since so many churches are locate don the squares, many will be hosting traditional Easter egg hunts for the little kids ---you should see how they are dressed on Easter, the finery is out of this world.
