New to Atlanta/Marietta and clueless

Greetings all,

Recently moved from New York City with two boys. One is 14 the other 9. I just don%26#39;t know where to go. In NY it%26#39;s so easy it almost seems like everything is laid out for you but here... well you have to dig!!!

Any ideas? I%26#39;d like to spend time with my boys but we%26#39;re working on a tight budget. We%26#39;re a humble 3 just looking for advice. Even if it cost we can save we just need some ideas.

kennesaw mtn battlefield is close and as scenic as it is historic. lake altoona is north a short ways and has plenty to offer. stone mountain has a lot going on an is reasonablly priced. you might try the thread on here about georgia state parks. they all have something special to offer and are either free or two bucks, two bucks. if nothing else go tour cnn and be on tv.

I was thinking about Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield park too.

Msbleu if you want a great day out, especially if your boys are interested in learning the history of your new home, Kennesaw park would be ideal. It%26#39;s relatively close to you. There is a National Park Service museum about the battles fought there and the park is gorgeous. As a kid I use to climb Kennesaw mountain several times a year. There are actually two peaks, Big Kennesaw and Little Kennesaw. It%26#39;s an easy climb on a paved path and the view of Atlanta from there (on a clear day) is great.

Just for trivia%26#39;s sake, Kennesaw comes from the Indian word Gah-nee-sah, which means cemetary or burial ground. That%26#39;s quite apt as there were 60,000 casualties, killed or wounded in the battles there during the Civil War. Artifacts like uniform items and spent minie balls (bullets) are still found all the time. (They immediately become property of the Park Service)As a kid I found a rusted spike type bayonet there. (I kept it) Then again there was an old trench line running through the neighborhood where I grew up and we found artifacts in our own backyard.

Amend that. There were 60,000 casualties killed, wounded, or captured during the battles. The state of prisoner of war camps at the time was such that many prisoners died in the camps.

Other inexpensive ideas: Centennial Olympic Park, Piedmont Park and dog park (your boys may enjoy watching evre-present roller blading exhibitions), Silver Comet bike trail, walk through Virginia Highlands or Little Five Points, Stone Mountain Park. This spring, there will be dozens of local neighborhood festivals that should be a lot of fun - the Dogwood Festival, Summerfest in Virginia Highlands, Inman Park Festival. Some cultural activities that cost a little money are: Carlos Museum at Emory, Fernbank Museum and Science Center (Imax), High Museum.

I was born and raised in Buckhead until I was 18 but then spent 25 years away, mostly abroad in Europe and Asia, but also in Colorado and Montana. I lived in some great places but at the end of the day, I chose to come back here to live.

I actually lived away for 29 years. (25 years abroad) When you get to be my age, the brain starts misfiring.

Stone Mtn is only $8 to park your vehicle, if u have less then 14 people. There are many things to do at the park without paying additional fees (from what the website says...haha). I will give u viewpoints of my ';actual'; Stone Mtn experience after this weekend. We are taking our 1st trip there on Sunday. We are new to the area also but are very anxious to see things.

I can offer you this....I was stationed in Ft Benning, Ga for 6 yrs %26amp; the National Infantry Museum is there. If I remember correctly, it is free. If your boys are at all interested in the military or history that would be an excellent trip but it%26#39;s approx 90 minutes from S Atl. The museum is 3 or 4 floors %26amp; has artifacts from the Revolutionary War upuntil the present day.

You may wanna check with Ft Benning %26amp; see what you would have to do to get into the museum cuz I believe they have tightened security at the entrances to the base since Sept 2001. Not a big concern tho, all you will PROBABLY have to do is pull your car um 1st to be sure.

Also,you will pass Pine Mountain %26amp; Callaway Gardens on the way to Ft Benning. They will be off of I-185.

Hello there. I am considering relocating to Marietta, GA. My other choice is Chattanooga, TN. Any suggestions on which is better quality of life. Guess Atlanta has really bad traffic. Thanks.
