good southern food?

We%26#39;re going to be in Atlanta for 1 day, 2 nights. Would love to have some awsome local cuisine. We%26#39;re from California, and hear about great southern cooking. Any suggestions?

The Colonnade is always popular, as is Mary Mac%26#39;s Tea Room. From what I hear, Pitty Pat%26#39;s Porch, which used to be quite popular with tourists, has gone downhill.

If you%26#39;re looking for a dive with a lot of character, a converted convenience store named Carver%26#39;s just west of downtown might fit the bill. It has limited tables, so you share a table with other diners, and serves heavy comfort food: fried chicken, black-eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, fried okra, sliced tomatoes, rice and gravy, banana pudding (SO good), and of course enormous glasses of sweet tea. Diners go through a line and order cafeteria style. It%26#39;s definitely more of a lunch place though, and will be filled with construction workers, students, lawyers, adn everything in between. Plan on getting some exercise afterwards - it%26#39;s a heavy meal.

Mary Mac%26#39;s for true Southern cooking.

If you put the words in the search box there are several comments about it.

Mary Mac%26#39;s and the Collonade are both great for traditional southern cooking -- the sort of food that grandma served at Sunday dinner. For a more contemporary and upscale approach to southern cooking, try South City Kitchen, located a block off Peachtree near 14th street in midtown. Check out their website and to see if that might appeal to you.

thank you for the great suggestions. We will definately try 2 or more of your suggestions.

Trip Advisor rocks!

South City Kitchen is excellent - they are open for both lunch and dinner. It%26#39;s located in Midtown Atlanta.

If you%26#39;re only going to be here for one day and two nights, go ahead a make plans to visit Mary Mac%26#39;s Tearoom at 224 Ponce De Leon Ave. ( http://www.marymacs.com/ ) and Thelma%26#39;s Kitchen at 302 Auburn Ave. (http://www.atlantadowntown.com/NewsThelmas.asp ). You don%26#39;t get any more authentic southern cuisine than at both of these places. Thelma%26#39;s makes without a doubt, the best fried chicken I have ever eaten and I am a fried chicken connoisseur. Plus if you have a little time to sightsee, Thelma%26#39;s is in the Martin Luther King Jr. historical district which includes his childhood home, Ebenezer Baptist church where he used to preach and his tomb.

greenwoods in roswell hits home here right smack dab between the eyes.

bobby and junes over near georgia tech is worthy of revisiting. enormous calorie packed breakfast making going back for lunch impossible, but the bbq was smelling good early so i%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s as good as it always was before. grits and gravy worthy of song.
