Where to stay, what to do??

Hello everyone,

I have been reading many topics but I feel the need to be selfish and just come and ask all you wonderful experts.

We will be moving from VA to Texas and going to Disney World on our way. (round about way)

I have always wanted to go to Savannah and so that will be our first stop. Since we are spending a ton on our Disney trip I have to be more modest on this stop.

On with the question already..I want to stay in the Historic district. Can you recommend a moderate hotel (clean is most important)and some ideas of what we can do for an early evening and morning stop? (this will be the first Sunday in June)

We have 2 girl scouts so I have that part already planned. Any other sights that should not be missed?

Thank you for your help!!!!!

';Moderate'; will be hard to fing in early June downtown (isn%26#39;t that a great Disney word?).

If I were you I would find the numbers of some Inns and a few of the chain hotels and call direct. If they aren%26#39;t booked they may cut you a deal, but I still don%26#39;t think you will gwt to moderate. At this point is $50 or $60 more for a room right in the middle of things really going to matter?

With the limited time I would just walk around in the Historic District, see the river sit outside somewhere and eat (Vinnie Van Go Go%26#39;s, pizza by the slice, in City Market, is fun for kids.

You will enjoy ';The Birthplace'; it is a beautiful house.

BrianO,

Thanks, you are right I would rather be in the heart of it.

I appreciate your comments.

Brian has pretty much summed it up. With limited time, stay as centrally located in the Historic District as possible. Then, you will be able to stroll around a good bit without fretting about parking. The entire Historic District will be on display for you and it will take up a goodly portion of your time. Walk through the parks, check out the architecture of the buildings and homes.

When you come to one of the interesting old churches, take time to take a look inside if they are open. Some of the stained glass windows are just lovely. Of special interest is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

I usuallly suggest that visitors walk down the center of the District, which is Bull Street, then if time permits, go over to Abercorn, take in the Forsyth Park and back to their lodgings. You may be able to arrange a tour bus that will cover a lot more territory, but there is something about walking and seeing close up that can%26#39;t be duplicated on a ride.

Check the Historic District (be SURE you get the one on Bay Street in the Historic District) Hampton Inn. It%26#39;s more than a cut above most Hampton Inns and superbly located.

(I believe they throw in breakfast, too, at least a continental.)
