Where to stay that is cheap just north of Savannah?

Please help! We are visiting Savannah this weekend for our short Spring Break away for the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. We are on a very tight budget. I have already made reservations to stay at the Clubhouse Inn in Savannah starting Saturday night. We originally planned to drive down early Saturday morning to save the expense on a hotel stay for Friday. After much consideration we have decided that it would be best to find inexpensive accomidations just north and west of Savannah just for Friday, March 31st. We would appreciate any suggestions. It would be 2 adults and 1 child (8 years). Thank you very much!!!

I%26#39;m not quite sure of just what you want, but if you are coming in from Atlanta on I-16, I would suggest Metter. It%26#39;s about an hour and a half from Savannah. Closer to Savannah would be the intersection leading to Statesboro.

Thank you Aileen! I was leaning toward the town Statesboro. I was just hoping someone would know of an inexpensive place to stay. Thank you for your advice!

I%26#39;d also suggest Metter; it is right beside I-16, whereas Statesboro is about 20 miles away fom the interstate. S%26#39;bro is also a college town, and always crowded on weekends so motels may be full there.

At Metter exit, there are also several fast food type places, (McDonald%26#39;s, Zaxby%26#39;s, Taco Bell, KFC, etc.) as well as a brand new seafood place called Crabby Joe%26#39;s. It is right across the road from McDonald%26#39;s, behind a Western Sizzlin type steakhouse. We ate there the other night and it was good and very reasonable.

A good bathroom, stretch your legs break could be at exit 51, the Dublin-McRae exit. There are several convenience stores and fast food places there, and a Holiday Inn Express, but going on to Metter will put you even closer to Savannah.

You%26#39;ll love Sav. this time of year!! It is a beautiful city any time, but in the spring, the beauty of all the dogwood and azaleas just makes you slow down and enjoy the beauty.

Have a safe trip, and let us know what you decide, and how you liked Savannah!!

Is it less than 1 1/2 hrs. from Statesboro to downtown Savannah? Is there a beach where college kids go from Statesboro? I am familiar with Tybee Island. Thank you. My daughter will be attending college in Statesboro next fall and we have never been to Georgia nor South Carolina.

Dyer,

A warm southern welcome to your daughter as she plans for college this fall!!!! Where are you from??

You said you%26#39;d never been to GA. or SC, you have to come explore downtown Savannah; the historic district is a wonderful experience.

Savannah is about 1 1/2 hours away from S%26#39;bro, and interstate all except state highway for the 15 or so miles from S%26#39;bro to the interstate. Then once you get to Savannah, about 1/2 hour more to Tybee Island, depending on traffic. That is where most of the college students to go the beach, and it is usually very crowded most weekends.

good luck, and we%26#39;d love to have you come visit GA!!

bwj54 - Thank you - that is what I call a warm southern welcome. We are from the South. South Dakota, that is!!!!! Our daughter graduates from Lincoln, Nebraska and has an offer to attend grad school free in Statesboro for two semesters. She loves to travel but this area is very unfamiliar to her and of course she doesn%26#39;t know anyone there (we have friends in Atlanta and Athens so that will help on weekends if she wants some familiarity). You have answered one of my questions, though. The college kids hang out on the beach. YEAH. She will want to do this often. She has been to Calif. beaches three times in her life, and Costa Rica. But I think the ocean is different here due to the barrier islands. But, what the heck, it is beach, not flatlands!!!! We will be staying 5 nights in Savannah in Nov. so will take the tours of the city to get a knowledgable description of the history and architecture. As my husband works, I will drive up to Statesboro once or twice. I have researched the two islands in SC near Savannah and maybe Charlston would be a good place to take our daughter (if she hasn%26#39;t already gotten there by the time we do!!) What about a day trip south of Savannah or any Nat%26#39;l Parks north or west of Statesboro? Thank you for your response.
