Thank you

Underground Atlanta

In one word: no. Underground is NOT recommended. Run a search on the word Underground in this forum and see people%26#39;s comments.

Underground Atlanta

Midtown is great however. Lots of restaurants, clubs, and bistros. Nice area.

The problem with Underground is that the powers that be have virtually refused to do anything realistic to clean the area up. Urban outdoorsmen and young thugs have pretty much made it their private playground, especially at night. Private sources have increasingly exerted their influence over the last 15 years in spite of the city government and are making headway in making the central area of downtown viable as a destination that can be enjoyed by adults and families alike. Underground in particular still has a way to go. It was originally an area of the city from the latter half of the 1800s that includes streets, rail and cable car lines, shops, stables, etc. that eventually was built over by layer upon layer of higher streets and areas, until it literally became an underground section of the city, with streets, shops, streetlights and such. Starting the the early %26#39;60s it became an adult entertainment location (not sexually oriented. Those clubs are other places) with lots of bars and clubs. It has been remodeled at least 5 times over the last 40 years, to some great fanfare, only to have it peter out when the powers that be refuse to do their jobs to protect the people who actually pay the bills. There are too many other great destinations all over Atlanta to have to put up with a hostile enviroment. And as long as the local powers are determined to maintain the status quo for the sake of political correctness, Underground won%26#39;t change.

Skip the Underground. We went when we first moved to the area, had been told it was ';not to be missed';, was a waste of time. We felt safe walking around but it%26#39;s really just a bunch of cheap stores with bars upstairs.

I echo the comments of others. In its heydey in the 70s, it was a fun place to go. But after a few facelifts, it%26#39;s not worth the time. The only good thing down there is World of Coke during the day time. And it%26#39;s slated to move next year to Centennial Park.

On Satuday night Latin Sol in downtown has a live band with salsa dancing. However, the last time we went the people hanging around in the streets made me feel extremely uneasy. We even know how to park directly in the parking garage and go directly into Underground. I still felt on edge. I would not recommend it for people who do not know their way around the area.
