Accomodation Help Please!

Hi there,

I%26#39;m coming to Savannah over Easter weekend, which I guess luckily for me in terms of prices, isn%26#39;t a US holiday, I don%26#39;t get it.

I am looking for a reasonably priced place to stay for a Saturday and Sunday night. The dollar sucks right now so I%26#39;m looking for something about $60 US if possible. I don%26#39;t mind being more than walking distance from town, as long as it%26#39;s safe (lone woman traveller) and there is a straight shot transit route into town.

My original plan was the the Savannah Pensione which I understand isn%26#39;t a hostel anymore but I can get a room there for about $45. But when I called the other day they said I could only make a reservation a week in advance! I would hate to wait and end up with nothing. Has anyone heard anything about this place?

I would like to book something reasonable as security that I can cancel should the Pensione have availability when I call.

Thanks so much!

pit stop trip to savannah

my husband and i are at amelia island and have just this afternoon and evening before heading back to california...we would love to drive up to visit savannah..any suggestions on what we should do and where to eat? (and we eat anything...dives,whatever as long as its good)

pit stop trip to savannah

Go right down to Bay Street to find a place to park. As close to Bull street as you can.

To get there:

95 north to I-16 east on 16 until it ends, right in Savannah. You will be going north on Montgomery Street. Go straight for a few blocks then it turns into a two way street and you will go around your first square. City Market will be on your right and Bay street one short block ahead of you. Start looking for a parking space as soon as it changes to two way.

If you get to Bull without finding a space turn right and keep looking.

Once you get parked, Go to Bull Street and Bay Street, facing city hall there is a stairway to the right that goes to River street which is worth seeing and has an arts crafts sale thing going on today.

When you are done on River Street, go back up to Bay and start walking down Bull Street. It is a very nice walk, with several nice squares and lots of old buildings and historical markers. When you cross Oglethorpe Ave, there will be a big white church on your right, next to it is a lane, walk down there and go to Angel%26#39;s BBQ to eat, they are open til 6.

Or turn right on Oglethorpe, on the right side is a nice little Bistro, on the left Mellow mushroom pizza and sandwhiches.

Walk as far as you have time to walk then go two blocks east or west to walk back through different squares.

Day Trip this weekend

Where is a good place for a family to go just for a day trip coming from Atlanta? I was planning on visiting a beach just to sit out and relax or walk along one. We have never visited St Simons and figure this weekend would be a nice visit just to get away.

Day Trip this weekend

East Beach is the best spot on St Simons. There is an old Coast Guard station that is now a museum right on the beach. There is good parking and bathroom facilites. Just down the beach heading towards the King and Prince Resort is Massengale Park with lovely live oak trees. I wonder if you really want to drive to St. Simons from Atlanta for the day. It is a 4 hour drive each way. A weekend trip yes.

Day Trip this weekend

That is quite a long way for a day trip, have you considered staying overnight, there are a few hotels that are not expensive (more inland on the island).

East Beach is a good beach to have access to plenty of parking and plenty of beach through the day, when the tie comes in on SSI a lot of beach disappears.

Some other things to consider would be to rent some bikes, there are a lot of bike trails. The village by the pier is a nice area to walk around and look at shops and grab a good bite to eat, 4th of May is excellent for breakfast and lunch, Barbara Jean%26#39;s is yummy for dinner, and Mullet Bay is a great place for a good bite to eat and a drink-all of these places are located in the village.

  • romantic dinners - help me choose!

I%26#39;m planning a romantic weekend getaway for my hubby %26amp; me and I%26#39;m trying to choose between restaurants. We have two dinners in Savannah and four restaurants to choose from. Anyone have ideas about how to choose between these? Thoughts about atmosphere? Differences between the restaurants? Location?

    Thanks!

    Nobel Fare

    Local 11 Ten

    Elizabeth on 37th

    Bistro Savannah

romantic dinners - help me choose!

Bumping this up for you; also check out Sapphire Grill website. We%26#39;re trying to decide between several for our upcoming visit in February. Good luck!

romantic dinners - help me choose!

We ate at several of these establishments and I would recommend Sapphire Grill!

thanks for the suggestions! any thoughts between Nobel Fare/ Local 11 Ten/ Elizabeth on 37th? Anyone know just how pricey these restaurants are? Thanks!

I have eaten at Sapphire Grill once. It was ok, nothing outstanding. Lets put it this way, if I were return to Savannah and were to have a dining experience, I%26#39;d look elsewhere before returning here.

DW and I enjoyed Elizabeth%26#39;s on 37th very much recently. Great food in a restored old house. One drawback for me the only parking was along the street.

You might also look at 700 Drayton. Good food, a romantic atmosphere and a wonderful wine list. After dinner, forsyth park is right accross the street for an evening stroll. Also, the bar, upstairs at 700 Drayton is imo a hidden gem for Savannah.

Forsyth Park is the last place you want to stroll after dinner. At night, the park is unsafe, period.

The park also closes at 9p.m., with signs posting the closure. You can see the locals jogging the park perimeter at all hours but seriously, do NOT ';stroll'; inside Forsyth Park at night.

I recommend going to Noble Fare for a romantic dinner but book your reservation as far in advance as possible.

Forsyth Park is the last place you want to stroll after dinner. At night, the park is unsafe, period.

I had no idea it was so bad.....I%26#39;ve walked in the park at night on several occasions and never felt unsafe.

TennRoadWarrior, yeah, stuff happens at the Park at night, muggings and worse, so that%26#39;s why the city has ';park closes at 9p.m.'; signs posted. We read the newspapers %26amp; watch the local TV news, and Savannah%26#39;s street crimes are the lead stories 95% of the time. Only the murders like when Jim Williams shot his boyfriend in Mercer House does it become a tourist attraction for the masses.

You were lucky to walk through unscathed, a lot of people, esp. the brainless college kids aren%26#39;t so lucky.

    Julia's HideAway?

Any reviews? It%26#39;s located across the street from old St. Johns Church? Good part of town? Please let me know@

    Julia's HideAway?

Yeah, it is across the street from St. John%26#39;s. My wife and I stayed there and had a terrific time. The owner thought of it all - even a hair dryer for the wife and a place in the garden for me to smoke my Cohiba. Great value, great location, and a great place to sleep. Thanks Julia!

    Julia's HideAway?

Huh? What? Never heard of it, or old St. Johns Church.

I think this is posted under an incorrect city%26#39;s forum.

Well, Joandio, just hush. I found it:

    www.sunnysavannahrentals.com/rent009.html

It is at Whitaker and Charlton Street, near

    ST. JOHN EPISCOPAL CHURCH.

I guess it is confusing when we have

    St. JOhn Episcopal Church

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

    St. John Baptist Church

then someone throws in old St. Johns Church and I get confused.

A favorite pastime of some Savannahians is telling their out of town friends to meet them at St. John%26#39;s Church, and then watching the mayhem ensue.

That is a good part of town, pretty close to everything. Whitaker has a few shops near Jones St, other than that it is an ugly one way freeway out of town. When you walk, head a block west to Barnard or a block east to Bull, much nicer walks.

I stayed at Julia%26#39;s last year and the owner, Ken, is a real nice guy who will make you feel very welcomed. It%26#39;s a very neat and clean little unit on the ground floor of the home. It%26#39;s perfect for a couple and as mentioned Bull St. is a block away and the walk anywhere isn%26#39;t bad, especially now that it%26#39;s cooled off. The only thing was having to park on the street and having to worry about getting a ticket the whole time I was there.

now that%26#39;s funny tram..........i always enjoy your humorus posts

You can get a parking pass for around $8 at the visitor%26#39;s center and then use it and avoid the meter when staying at Julia%26#39;s Hideaway. I found the parking on Charlton Street pretty easy to come by. Also, you can park your car at the nearby Liberty Street Garage, unload your stuff at Julia%26#39;s and then move the car to the garage. Cause once you are unpacked, you don%26#39;t need the car.

I%26#39;ve been meaning to repost here since I traveled down to Savannah - I didn%26#39;t stay there, we stayed at Savannah B%26amp;B, but we walked by Julia%26#39;s Hideaway and it was in a fine part of town, it seemed to be well kept on the outside and all that the owner represented it to be - the only issue I had was at the time he wanted me to send cash in up front, and being from a big city on the west coast, of course I was suspicious :), but it turns out this is quite the norm down there, so I am sure all would have been just fine. I really like Savannah B%26amp;B, but next time I go down there, I%26#39;ll probably book with Julia%26#39;s to see what I missed last time, :)

    Safety in Savannah

There is a discussion about night time safety in Forsyth Park in another Savannah thread.

That discussion got me wondering if there are other areas in Savannah that should be considered off limits after dark.

Every city has those no-go-zones. Insiders know what areas to stay away from. People unfamiliar with a city can unknowingly enter such an area and learn the hard way.

We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express in the Historic District. I would appreciate it if the Savannah insiders could caution me on general areas of concern. Because of the tip in the other thread, I%26#39;ll not stray into Forsyth Park after dark.

    Thanks.

    Safety in Savannah

No one any where in this wide world is 100% safe. However, all the areas within the Historic District that the tourists usually go, are considered safe during the daylight hours. Dark alleyways anytime and especially after dark are not safe.

Nor is it considered ';safe'; to wander around in unknown, all alone, after dark. When the sun sets, and crowds begin to thin out, stick around other people. Use common sense.

It%26#39;s doubtful that you would have an occasion to seek out the really bad sections of Savannah outside of the Historic District. The HD is large enough that you won%26#39;t feel as if you have to explore other areas.

As far as Forsyth Park after dark, it%26#39;s a large park area with lots of trees and bushes. There is no way it can be lighted enough to be totallly without dark unexpected hiding places. You simple would not have any need to go into such a place after dark. The other parks and squares are much smaller, but, after dark, they take on a different degree of safety than they have during the day. Again, people simply don%26#39;t go sight seeing in the parks late at night unless they have had too much to drink or are lost.

You%26#39;ll see what I mean after you get here as to where to go. Yes, crime is in Savannah, but being sensible will go a long, long way towards protecting you. The Historic District is only a small part of Savannah, but it%26#39;s large enough to keep you busy.

    Atlanta Aquarium

I%26#39;d love to get some tickets (4 or 5) for sometime during the week of March the 16th! Anyone have tickets they want to sell? Thanks!

    Atlanta Aquarium

Why not just buy them on the aquarium%26#39;s website?

    Atlanta Aquarium

Ditto; you aren%26#39;t likely to get discounted tickets, and if you did, the price difference wouldn%26#39;t be much. They%26#39;re only a little more than $20 in the first place.

    Things to do with children

We are thinking of coming to the Helen area on our vacation at the end of May this year. What are some good things to do with children (5 %26amp; 8)in Helen and the surrounding area. I know we will go to the Cabbage Patch Hospital in Cleveland, but there doesn%26#39;t seem to be a lot of other things for the kids to do. Thanks for your help.

    Things to do with children

Brasstown Bald and Anna Ruby Falls are nice. You could tube down the river if it is warm enough.

There%26#39;s a couple of mini golf places in Helen.

Thanks for all of y%26#39;alls help. I also found mention of a Kangaroo farm that looks like fun. I think we can find enough to entertain the kids for several days.

  • Braselton, Ga. Hotels

My child has a golf tournament in Braselton first week of April. Have read many negative things about chateau elan. Trying to figure out where to stay. Would prefer someplace within 15 minutes or so. We will be there about 6 nights so not too expensive and needs to be nice and clean. New??

    Any suggestions??

    thanks.

    Braselton, Ga. Hotels

There%26#39;s not much besides the Chateau Elan in the immediate vicinity, except for a Holiday Inn Express directly across the street that gets mixed reviews.

Try looking in the Mall of Georgia area, along GA Hwy 20 between I-85 and I-985. There are several national chain hotels around the mall, including Hampton Inn, SpringHill Suites, Wingate, Country Inn and Suites, etc. It may not be within 15 minutes, depending on traffic and the particular hotel you select, but it should be 20 minutes or less unless traffic%26#39;s really bad (the mall exit off I-85 is two exits southwest of the Chateau Elan exit).

    Braselton, Ga. Hotels

I am curious what you heard about Chateu Elon. I have stayed there a couple times on business and thought it was a very nice, well run place. My biggest concern staying there on my own would simply be that it is pretty expensive on our budget. Other wise, it is a very nice place.

  • Marriott Residence Inn in Historic District

Anyone know what the parking situation is for the ';Marriott Residence Inn Savannah Downtown,'; located at 500 West Charlton Street? I have a reservation for this coming June, but the Marriott website does not state what the parking arrangment is, which they normally do. I%26#39;m inclined to think that parking is elsewhere -- on your own -- at, say, a nearby garage.

If the hotel has parking, or if anyone knows of a nearby garage, please let me know.

Marriott Residence Inn in Historic District

This property is not complete, perhaps in 2 or 3 months or so it will be finished. They may not have their parking arrangements figured out this far ahead, if it%26#39;s not to be on-site. There is a large public garage within a few blocks east across MLK, Jr. Blvd., on East Liberty facing the Civic Center....but I hope there is a parking lot on-site or closer than the one on Liberty Street. You%26#39;ve got four months to go, so give things a while for completion.

I am booking a room for next weekend March 6-10, and the website is allowing me so I think it%26#39;s already open?? It said that parking is valet $12 per day with in/out allowance.

I stand corrected, and thanks for bringing us up to date to the newest hotel in downtown Savannah! This old dog can still learn some new tricks. If I could just make the economy better......

I just booked for later in the summer. I believe the website said a gated lot with in and out privileges for $12 a night.

Hopefully this is close enough that I will be within walking distance of most things downtown. I will have a 9 %26amp; 11 yr old and we plan on our 4 day weekend to include:

    Riverboat/Trolley

    Forsyth Park

Art Museum has something for kids this Saturday

Eating lots of yummy food and Ice cream

SCAD? I heard there is a good shop there, maybe not for the kids but hey mom can have fun too right?

    Tybee Island

We are all excited to visit Savannah, I%26#39;ll post a review of the hotel when we get back.

    March 8, 2009

This hotel is open- The parking is along the sides of the building with a courtyard pool in the center. It is brand new and is very charming and spacious. You are a good 10 to 20 blks from the different squares and will need a car but is a 3 min ride to the attraction or river front. I have two dogs and we stopped in savannah on the way to NC.

I would not stay this far away from the historic district attractions- it is fanatstic for a longer stay with a small kitchen.

Offers a breakfast and is very easy at the edge of historic district on Martin Luther King Blvd..

    walk from MARTA to hotel

I am meeting my kids and grandchildren in Atlanta. They are driving but I am flying and will get there first. We are staying at the Downtown Residence Inn 134 Peachtree, which does not have an Airport Shuttle. So I%26#39;m looking at taking the MARTA, I can see that the Peachtree Station is near the hotel (one website said right across the street, but it looks like a couple of blocks on the Google map) So my question: is this a street than an arthritic old woman with a suitcase can safely get across. It may seem like a dumb question, but I don%26#39;t want to be trying to dart across a multi-lane expressway or walking several blocks to find a crosswalk. Been there, done that

And is there more than one exit from the station. If so how are they marked. The Residence Inn is to the South toward Ellis Street. Can you tell I have a really poor sense of direction?

    walk from MARTA to hotel

South vs. north at this station is the smartest question you can ask. :-) There are 2 exits, north and south, and it makes a big difference which one you take. You%26#39;ll want the south exit. There%26#39;s a very long escalator up to the street since it%26#39;s so far below ground. The Residence Inn should be within a block or two of where you come out. Peachtree Street is 4 lanes across and not that hard to cross if you wait for the light. That%26#39;s a place that is pedestrian-friendly.

Your best bet is to get on one of the last few cars on the train from the airport (rack or J, please correct me if I%26#39;m wrong on this). You%26#39;ll have less walking that way.

    walk from MARTA to hotel

    Spot on, catherp.

When you get on the train at the airport station, walk to the rear of the train and get on one of the last cars -- note that it doesn%26#39;t matter whether the train you board says ';North -- North Springs'; or ';Northeast -- Doraville';; either will take you to Peachtree Center Station. Coming from the airport, you%26#39;ll be traveling south to north. When you get to Five Points Station, take advantage of the train being stopped to make sure you%26#39;re facing forward in the train (i.e., looking the direction the train is moving).

Once the train reaches Peachtree Center station, the doors on the left side of the car will open. Get out, and turn left. Walk to the escalator, and take it up to the next level. When you reach that level, stay to the right and walk toward the escalator to your right and in front of you. Take the (very long) escalator up, and when you reach the top, you%26#39;ll be on the west side of Peachtree Street at Peachtree and Carnegie Way/Ellis Street.

I believe the signs for the exit refer to Carnegie Way and Ellis Street, but can%26#39;t remember for certain. There are four exits from the station -- you *don%26#39;t* want the ones marked ';Peachtree Center East'; or ';Peachtree Center West';, ';Harris Street';,

There shouldn%26#39;t be any problem crossing Carnegie Way and Forsyth Street to get to your hotel -- they%26#39;re both small streets without a lot of vehicle traffic, and the distance is shorter than it looks on the map -- a lot of streets just happen to come together at that particular point.

There%26#39;s a map of the immediate vicinity here: itsmarta.com/getthere/stations/maps/AreaMaps鈥?/a>

Thank you for your very helpful replies. How generous of rackensack in particular to be so specific in his information. This will be the first time I have used this form of transit on my own, so you are building my confidence.

Can anyone give her a guesstimate of cab fare from the airport to her destination. I am concerned about her arthritis.

I don%26#39;t think she%26#39;ll need a cab. Many people assume that MARTA is the most difficult way to travel when it%26#39;s actually not. That area is probably one of the most pedestrian-friendly in Atlanta since so many people use it on a daily basis.

My arthritis is not that bad. If it weren%26#39;t for the luggage, I wouldn%26#39;t worry at all. And honestly I could swing the cost of a cab, but where would be the adventure in that?

Sounds like I misunderstood your condition and spirit of advanture. I have terrible arthritis in my knees so was concerened for you. GOOD FOR YOU for trying something new:-)

Taxi fare is easy to estimate -- Atlanta has established flat fares from the airport to business destinations in each of three flat fare zones:

Airport to Downtown: $30 (plus tip) + $2/add%26#39;l passenger

Airport to Midtwon: $32 (plus tip) + $2/add%26#39;l passenger

Airport to Buckhead: $40 (plus tip) + $2/add%26#39;l passenger

The OP%26#39;s destination is in downtown, so $30 plus tip it is.

Hotel doesn%26#39;t offer a shuttle but there is a shuttle service available. If you would like to be dropped off at the door, try The Atlanta Link. $16.50 per person one way and $29.00 round trip. I see this shuttle in downtown all the time... www.theatlantalink.com

  • Little Five Points and a place for Great Pizza

My buddies and I will be in ATL in March. We are looking at Little Five Points as a place to go on a Thursday night. Is it a cool place to check out? Is one bar better than the other?

Also... we are looking for the best pizza in town. Traveling distance and price is not a problem. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your help!

Little Five Points and a place for Great Pizza

Yes, Little Five Points is great. You can just wander between the bars. Star Bar is fun if there%26#39;s a good band playing. Corner Tavern and Vortex are fun but most people will be at tables eating rather than hanging around the bar. Vortex has great burgers. Corner Tavern is fine for bar food, but Brewhouse and Porter are better. Euclid Yacht Club is more of a traditional bar and is a ton of fun - definitely go there. Brewhouse is a fantastic place to sit on the patio and watch people. Front Page News and Sabrosa share a beautiful patio and are good places to drink, but neither has particularly good food. The scene in those two places is a little less eclectic than the other bars of L5P. The Porter is newer, but the bar is very happening. Check the calendar for Variety Playhouse, because it is a good place to see a band.

For pizza, you don%26#39;t even have to leave L5P - try Savage Pizza.

Little Five Points and a place for Great Pizza

Hey thanks a lot! Your info will be very helpful. We will try to check out all of your suggestions. Looking forward to it. Again thanks...

bird4514 - I agree with most of what JAtlanta says. I would especially check out the schedule for Variety Playhouse for the days you%26#39;re here.

';The best pizza in town'; is a subjective thing. I know a lot of people who like Savage Pizza, but I%26#39;ve never been a fan. My preference is Fellini%26#39;s on McLendon Ave. Walking distance (but it%26#39;s a good walk!) from L5P.

March weather can be iffy here, but it should be a nice time of year.

I was also going to suggest Savage pizza....plus its right there in little 5 points. I%26#39;ve been there once and I personally really liked their pizza....they offer like 5 different sauces and they have quite a few specialty pizzas. Another pizza suggestion is Cameli%26#39;s gourmet pizza at 699 Ponce de Leon Ave. I%26#39;ve never been there (been meaning to check it out) but it gets a lot of good reviews...its not to far from little 5 points if you google the address i gave you. to be honest though at least from what i%26#39;ve experienced, atlanta is definitely not a pizza town.

I would also second checking out the Porter. If you have any interest in beer (and who doesnt!) you need to check this place out. Lots of different beer selections but dont expect to get a budweiser or guiness because its only micro brews and small foreign brewerys here. Havent had any food here, but from what I%26#39;ve smelled it sure does smell good.

Right next to porter is Criminal Records. Definitely worth checking out if you are into music. Then a little further down Euclid is the Yacht club. Great little bar cool bartenders also someone in there to have an interesting conversation with. Always have had a good meal in here. Personally I%26#39;d stay out of Brewhouse. Average food

at best and the service can be lacking.

Another bar and place to see bands is the Star Bar. I%26#39;ve only been there once but from what I remember it was a really cool place.

As you can see plenty of places in little 5 to hang out....definitely enough to keep you busy for a night. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey thanks a lot for the info. We will definately be putting Little 5 on the to do list. I love pizza but it sounds like there is a couple of good burger joints too. Hell, as long as there is beer I%26#39;m good with it. Looking forward to it! Thanks again.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to put in a vote here for Litte 5 Pizza, near where the road forks, right near

The Clothing Wearhouse, almost across from the Brewhouse Cafe (which is home to crazy Brit beer lovers). How can you guys have missed this! THIS is some of as close to NY pizza as you%26#39;ll get in this town, with some of the similar atmosphere.

NO Bar in Little 5 Points should be missed, so I hope you guys can do all of it! The Euclid Avenue Yacht Club is a rare place to find Busch in a can and boiled peanuts! Don%26#39;t mind all the bikes parked outside, the inside is not to be missed.

Little 5 is definitely a neat place to go. As for pizza, in my opinion you can%26#39;t beat Everybody%26#39;s Pizza, which has been around since my mom was a teenager waiting tables. I think there are 2 locations, I would do the one in the Emory area.

The best Pizza in Atlanta, hands down, by far, is Nancy%26#39;s Pizza. It is the same Nancy%26#39;s that started in Chicago. Atlanta is not really a good Pizza town, but you can get good Chicago style Pizza here.

  • Deep South Vacation 2009

Need to know whats happening in the Deep south. How has the recession effected the areas outside of the bigger cities. We normally stay off the Interstates and travel the smaller roads to see the real America. We have been over for the past 4 years but as its so expensive to get there we want to know if its a good or bad time to go to the States.

    Deep South Vacation 2009

Not at all; surely many have been hurt by the downturn in the form of foreclosures and the closing of the occasional business, but on the most part it%26#39;s no big deal for a good part of the population and certainly not for tourists. From my personal experiences, things are the same now as they were last year. What kinds of changes did you expect?

Money-wise I%26#39;d guess it%26#39;s a good time for you to come, what with the dollar being so low.

    Kristian

    Deep South Vacation 2009

Thanks for your reply.Dont know what to expect really as last year in Daytona and other areas where very quiet

and a lot of shops and resturants had closed it seemed that the only ones moving around were Tourists and americans were saying at home.

You have heard a younger person%26#39;s views...not sure if employed or still in school or both. I can tell you as a teacher in my 26th year of teaching that times are very different. The teacher next to me was told she would not be back next year due to cuts unless the economy improved. Others have been laid off at my school and in the districts around mine. I would say tourism overall is way down, Many of the smaller places in my town have closed. My family is taking a small vacation for spring break thanks to a tax refund but it will more than likely be our last for a few years. Prices at hotels are down overall where I was looking ( Myrtle Beach) . You will do fine if you have the money. Major places are still open as well as many smaller ones. You will notice a difference but I would think not to the point of having a bad time.

Daytona is quiet because there is little to do there when the race is not going on, and most americans prefer the beaches on the gulf side or far south florida. But I believe most folks are scaling back on travel in the US, as we dont know where the ';bottom'; is yet. Both previous posters are probably right in their views: Unemployment is the highest it has ever been, and it is almost impossible to find anyone who is ';hiring'; but at the same time, unemployment has just crested 8%, so over 90% of americans still have a job this week.

    I didn%26#39;t mean to imply that people aren%26#39;t hurting financially or tourism isn%26#39;t down in general, but I haven%26#39;t seen any tourism industry shutdown in any sort of a scale that might make it a ';bad time to go to the States.';

Can you give more specifics in what you%26#39;re asking? Are you concerned that restaurants or hotels will be closed?

My experience is that a downturn in an economy is a great time to travel for 2 reasons:

    1. you%26#39;re helping revive that economy no matter how small or large you travel and

    2. you find incredible deals.

So I think it%26#39;s the perfect time to come to the US. I%26#39;ve just booked $119/night deal at a prime NYC hotel over a holiday weekend. That%26#39;s 1/3 what I%26#39;ve paid in the past. You should be able to find deals like that any place you want to go.

Thanks for all the replys. As I said earlier we Love the USA and would gladly support the econemy as we have done for the last 4 years and as over here am glad to hear the cities are doing resonably well. Its outside of the big cities in the smaller towns and cities and the Hotel/Motels on the Interstates we are concerned about.

Example we were looking at Flying into Chicago and driving to New Orleans Taking in all of interest on the way.

Another route was Fly into Houston/Dallas Drive to New Orleans on to Daytona again taking in all along the Way.Also be glad of any Suggestions on Routes or Drives. But Last year doing a Drive From Nashville to Atlanta and onto Jacksonville we were shocked to drive into Towns and see Resturants empty. One being Sticky Fingers Chattanooga (Great food by the way).

I guess as I said as the Flights alone cost 2500 Euro

We dont want to pay a fortune and end up being disapointed as we have to save a year for these holidays I would perfer to wait a year than go and spoil our Love of American Holidays.

You shouldn%26#39;t have to pay 2500 euros for a flight unless you are flying business class. A friend just paid that for business class to and from Paris in high season which was a great deal for business class. There are astonishing flight deals all over now.

For every Sticky Fingers you see closed, you%26#39;ll see plenty of restaurants that are still open. To a certain extent, restaurants are cyclical no matter what the economy looks like. In my mom%26#39;s town, there%26#39;s a closed Sticky Fingers across the street from around 7 new restaurants. I chalk that up to the fact that customers now have better food choices and Sticky Fingers just couldn%26#39;t sustain the same business with competition around.

So my answer is that no matter how bad the economy gets, you%26#39;ll find plenty of rewarding things for your trip if you decide to come.

I travel a lot, and have not really observed many effects of the economic downturn, in Atlanta or across the country. Other than in Vegas, hotel and restaurant prices remain fairly steady. Restaurants seem just as full - we had to wait weeks to get a decent reservation at Craft recently. I%26#39;ve flown about 6-7 times in 2009, and with one exception every plane has been at capacity. To my chagrin, I have not seen any dramatic dips in airfare. I don%26#39;t know specifically what you%26#39;re looking for that you think you may not find, but I definitely think you should keep your travel plans.

Perhaps you can find a more enjoyable beach area than Daytona, which in my mind is more associated with racing than as a vacation destination. Have you considered Destin, Miami, Naples, Panama City, Key West, Gulf Shores?

You mentioned a driving tour, and I don%26#39;t want to discourage that, but do realize how large the US is and how much mind-numbingly boring territory you will have to cover to get in between the interesting places. Chicago and New Orleans are both wonderful places to visit, but you%26#39;d be better off flying between the two.

';One being Sticky Fingers Chattanooga (Great food by the way).'; That must have been an anomaly; from every report I%26#39;ve heard restaurants are doing all right; ones that were all ready not doing well may have more trouble, but I know that both Sticky Fingers in Chattanooga are very popular. A Sunday school group at my church recently went to the Sticky Fingers at Hamilton Place and had to wait 45 minutes for their food just because there were so many people there and the staff wasn%26#39;t used to it.

By the way, depending on your route I%26#39;d highly recommend that you revisit Chattanooga and spend some more time there. (Assuming, of course, that you liked what you saw when you drove through or detoured over to downtown at all.) Lots and lots of off the beaten path nature preserves and historic sites, as well as a variety or more marketed attractions.

    Restaurants near Westin Peachtree Plaza

Will be in for a conference in July and staying at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. We will not have a car, so will have to rely on foot or public transportation. Are there plenty of restaurants in the general vicinity?

    Restaurants near Westin Peachtree Plaza

There are restaurants close by, and in recent years a few decent ones have come onto the downtown scene, but generally I think most natives would tell you that you%26#39;re going to have more variety and better places by heading to Midtown or Buckhead. Fortunately, either area is an easy MARTA ride away, and the Westin Peachtree Plaza sits right on top of the North-South MARTA line%26#39;s Peachtree Center station.

If you have some ideas about the types of food, price range, style of restaurant, etc., that you think you%26#39;d enjoy, we might be able to offer some specific suggestions.

    Restaurants near Westin Peachtree Plaza

Directly across the street from the Westin is IL Mulino Italian (fine dining), Hooters (Wings, Ribs, Seafood), Hard Rock Caf茅, Durango Oak Fire Steakhouse, Ray鈥檚 In the City (Seafood) and around the corner is Daily鈥檚 (fine dining/jazz), Azio www.aziodowntown.com, HSU鈥檚 Gourmet Chinese, Agatha鈥檚 Mystery Dinner Theatre www.agathas.com and Mama Ninfa鈥檚 Mexican.

BLT Steak and Fab are both absolutely wonderful, restaurants you%26#39;ll be talking about long after you return home. Room at Twelve is quite good The other restaurants in that area are mediocre at best. If you%26#39;re looking for something cheap or moderately priced that%26#39;s good you%26#39;ll need to get out of downtown.

There is some cheaper and fast options in this area as well. There is a food court in Peachtree Center. You will have a lot to choose from.

Public Transportation is easy. Marta is right there.

    Chip and pin

Has chip and pin arrived yet in the USA or do you still sign when using a credit card?

    Chip and pin

I don%26#39;t think it has as I don%26#39;t even know what you mean. We sign when we use a credit card.

    Chip and pin

T%26#39;s common throughout Europe. Instead of a signature you enter a 4 digit number. PIN = Personal Identification Number,

I would be very careful about chip and pin. Gas (Petrol) Stations are fine with it, but many retailers I have found, will either look at you blankly and say that it will not work, whereas others will process it manually, rather than going through the system.

I do know that my debit card which is chip and pin, has been refused at many places, whereas my credit card has been more successful.

I would bring a mixture of credit cards, cash and travellers cheques.

    For Aileen679

The idea behind ';chip and pin'; is to cut down on fraud. If your purse/wallet is stolen together with all your cards nobody can use them to buy anything (unless you%26#39;re silly enough to write down the 4 digit number somewhere within).

It%26#39;s been in use in Europe for quite some time now and when I had my wallet stolen in Budapest it was at least gratifying to know that my cards were covered.

As a final note, personal cheques here in the UK are hardly used at all - most retailers won%26#39;t accept them any longer.

that sounds like a dandy idea. Thanks for filling me in.

It would be just my luck to have a number that confused me....just like my social security number. Most people have their%26#39;s memorized. But mine is --41----42....or is it --42---41? I am never quite sure. I have the same problem with birthdays. was it 8-12 or 8-21?

  • Baggage on connecting flights

We%26#39;re flying from Heathrow to Newark then down to Savannah in about 3 weeks time.

I realise we have to collect our baggage at Newark and wait for the connection to Savannah but will we have to do the same at Charlotte (we change planes there) or will the baggage be checked right on through to Savannah.

    Many thanks

    Baggage on connecting flights

No, once you collect your baggage at Newark and check in for the Charlotte to Savannah flights, your luggage will be checked through to Savannah.

Cocoa Beach , FL via ATL

Hello, I am coming to FL via Atlanta... I have all day to drive on Thursday April 10. Is I-75 a better route or is I-16 and than 1-95 coast traveling cool? I have never been on the coast line and was thinking that might be different. Also if anyone know of alot of constructin either way please advise, thanks.

Cocoa Beach , FL via ATL

I-95 is does not offer any type of ';scenic'; driving, so as far as seeing more either way would be about the same in my opinion. Last time I drove that route we took 16 to 95 and drove that down, it%26#39;s a very busy interstate though and that is spring break week for most of the areas around here. As far as construction I wouldn%26#39;t be able to tell you.

    Gull Reef

We are thinking about a vacation to Tybee Island in May with 2 other couples and potentially two older kids.

The Gull Reef condos on the beach - from the pics - seem like a good value for everything I%26#39;m looking for:

pool, 3 bedrooms, wifi, close to beach, nice and well cared for.

Has anyone else had any experience with these condos(all the reviews look good so far) or any advice?

Also saw Brass Rail but so far can%26#39;t seem to find any with internet access.

We have been undecided on a vacation spot - I know the gulf beaches are nicer but Tybee seems to have it all since it%26#39;s so close to Savannah and we could do a day trip to Cumberland Island.

    Gull Reef

    Hello

We are booked at the Gull Reef this summer for our first trip to Tybee. We rented through a group of owners and hope it will go well. I liked to locations and the fact that there was a pool along with the beach.

What does Cumberland Island have to offer? We have two teenagers and two younger kids (8%26amp;10) traveling with our group. If there is something there that might interest them I%26#39;d like to hear about it.

Hope you find the details you are looking for.

    Gull Reef

Cumberland Island is one of my favorite places on earth. It%26#39;s a beautiful nature preserve and state park that used to be the home of the Rockefeller%26#39;s and Carnegie%26#39;s. There%26#39;s so much history that I feel overwhelmed trying to explain the signifigance of it.

It has a beautiful beach and lots of opportunity for hiking, bike riding, camping and bird watching. There are no restraunts or food vendors on the island. You take a ferry over and stay the day or camp and take a picnic. There is one luxury resort that goes for over $300 a night. If you have teens looking for typical beach type attractions it may be boring to them and perhaps a bit hard with small children - but if you want to walk around and experience a beautiful nature preserve with a ton of history and see wild horses and turkeys roaming free - it%26#39;s quite an experience.

Here%26#39;s a link for more info:

    http://www.nps.gov/cuis/

I haven%26#39;t checked but I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;s more on the trip advisor boards. It is about 2.5 hours from Tybee so perhaps a bit of a haul for a day trip but to me worth it. I%26#39;ve been there twice.

    another link with good info

    tripcart.com/usa-regions/Georgia-South-Carol…

also - who did you go through for your gull reef rental? i%26#39;m trying to determine who is reputable and the best route.

  • Bear Lodge Falls Vacation Rental Home

We are planning family reunion possibly to this vacation rental house. It is located at 3183 Emery Creek Road, Chatsworth, GA‎, west of Ellijay just north of Ft Mountain State Park. Anyone know anything about it? Or possibly another vacation home rental in the mountains which would sleep 14, have a swimming pool or creek, hot tub, fire pit, and indoor rec/gameroom for kids?

    Thanks in advance!

Bear Lodge Falls Vacation Rental Home

Wilderness View Cabins has some nice cabins. I%26#39;m not sure if they have one large enough to accommodate your needs but you may want to check their website.

    Camping near Savannah -- Skidaway?

I am planning on staying a few days at a campground near Savannah at the end of July 2009. Skidaway sounds nice, but I%26#39;ve heard the gnats are really bad. Can anyone tell me for sure?

    Camping near Savannah -- Skidaway?

The gnats are bad, but that%26#39;s anywhere here. They%26#39;re starting now and will go until it gets cool again in Oct. Use lots of OFF and citronella candels!

    Camping near Savannah -- Skidaway?

Camping just about anywhere in GA with the exception of the mountains can be miserable in July. The sites at Skidaway do have electric so bring some fans and extension cords so you%26#39;ll at least have a breeze.

Otherwise, it is a lovely state park with great hiking and biking trails. Check out UGA%26#39;s marine research center on the Skidaway River while you are there.

Thanks for the advice. I just wanted to stop and see Savannah on the way down to Brunswick for our son%26#39;s graduation from FLETC; otherwise I wouldn%26#39;t have chose July to visit. We will probably forego Skidaway this time and stay inland on the west of Savannah. I%26#39;vd encountered those gnats on Jekyl Island previously.

It does not matter if you stay inland or on on of the islands. That time of year the gnats, skitters, yellow flys, etc will be out in full force. Around here it is a fact of life. The 2 campgrounds off of 95 to the west that I can think of will be just about as bad. There is also a campground on Tybee which is now owned by the City of Tybee that will have the gnats too but may not be as bad as Skidaway. The Skidaway campground is in the woods and by the marsh.

If you stay at any off them get some bug spray with DEET in it. the higher the percentage the better.

    Priceline

I was on Priceline just messing around trying to plan for our 2nd anniversary. I was hoping to win The Mansion. Well, anyway it seems that I have won the Savannah Hilton DeSoto in April for $80 a night. 3 star hotel is what they say. I hope that it%26#39;s better than what I%26#39;ve been reading.

I guess I%26#39;ll search the forum to see what we could do while we%26#39;re there.

Thanks to those who let me know about Priceline. I guess they%26#39;re not dropping the prices that low on The Mansion unless you%26#39;re close to the date of your trip.

    Priceline

The Hilton is in a great spot, very central and has a nice pool a tall floor above the street. It is older and has some remodel work going on but I think you will be happy.

    Priceline

Never bid on anything less than 4 stars on priceline. I am not familiar with this hotel, but 3 star is often 1-2 star in reality.

The Hilton is great. Wish I had got that lucky for St. Pat%26#39;s day! Tons to do while there. You will love it.

Miketeresa, that has also been my experience with Priceline. We went the Priceline route for a hotel in DC that was 3 stars and it wasn%26#39;t. You can tell that its not a bargin when you see homeless people begging outside the hotel.

The Hilton is a nice hotel downtown centrally located in the District. I can assure there will be no ';bums'; hanging around the outside of the hotel. Now I can%26#39;t speak for the some of the squares but I know the hotels don%26#39;t allow loitering around the front door.

I did not see anything above 3 stars except for resort and Marriott had 3.5 stars. I only want in the Historic District. I think $80 a night in the Historic District sounds great.

Typically Priceline star ratings are actually lower than the property is with AAA, Mobil and the like. Priceline has more rigorous star rating requirements because you don%26#39;t know exactly what hotel you are booking before you buy it. I know of numerous hotels in Charleston, Savannah, North Carolina, and in other cities that are AAA 4 Diamond hotels that don%26#39;t participate on Priceline because they would be 3 star...sometimes lower. Best deals I have seen for the Mansion have been on TravelZoo. www.travelzoo.com. Sign up for their top 20 to get email specials from all over the place.

vegas: Here is the one of the deals that Travelzoo is offering for the Mansion. How is $109 a night/ regularly $299? Here%26#39;s the link:

    hotels.travelzoo.com/lodging-hotels/533035

    Hope this helps,

    Thanks, Luckytimer.

I checked too late. The deal was no longer available. Thanks anyway.

Bus, train or coach to Charleston

The flights are booked (Heathrow to Newark and then on to Savannah) and the hotel is booked in Charleston(thanks culturehound for your advice re Hotwire) but how do we get from Savannah to Charleston without hiring a car?

I%26#39;ve looked on the Amtrak website but there only appear to be 2 trains a day - one early in the morning and the other in the evening. Am I looking in the right place as I assumed there would be a more frequent service?

Is there an alternative bus/coach service and if so is it more frequent?

    Many thanks

Bus, train or coach to Charleston

I think renting a car is your best/cheapest choice -- Greyhound and amtrack are not the way to go, and you should be able to rent a small car at a very affordable rate. There may also be a shuttle bus that runs from the airport to charleston.

Bus, train or coach to Charleston

Rent a car and drive to Savannah from Charleston. It%26#39;s under a two-hour drive.

The Greyhound bus service is to be avoided unless you like to travel with crying babies, boom boxes, rappers and suspicious odors.

I%26#39;ve Amtrack-ed back and forth to Charleston many times and it%26#39;s o.k. Bear in mind that our train system is utterly primitive compared to yours in terms of frequency and efficiency. I have the trip rather nice, though. The trains do run only twice a day. I%26#39;ve had a nice breakfast on that train, but you are talking REALLY early in the a.m.

Sorry. That sentence should read: I have FOUND the trip rather nice...

Everything is now booked (accommodation and travel)for our month long trip from Savannah to New York except for one thing.

It%26#39;s the first part from Savannah to Charleston and reading your replies here I think a hire car is going to be the best option.

If we do this would it be possible to visit one of the plantations en route or is that going out of our way?

Middleton Place Plantation and Magnolia Gardens would both be on your way into Charleston. Get a SC map when you get here so that you can plan your way in by going by them.

Neither of them are what you may be thinking of when you say Plantation. They once were, but now they are fantastic gardens.

    General policy on tipping

We%26#39;ll be arriving in Savannah at the beginning of April at the start of our month long journey to New York.

Can somebody please tell me what are general policies on tipping in the USA.

Who do you tip? Who don%26#39;t you tip? How much do you tip? Are service charges sometimes automatically added and, in which case, I presume you don%26#39;t tip?

    Many thanks

    General policy on tipping

    http://www.drdaveanddee.com/tipping.html

    General policy on tipping

Always tip the waiter or waitress at least 15% unless they did a HORRIBLE job. They only make about $3 an hour w/out tips, which is nothing. I always do 20% unless the service was bad. I%26#39;ve left no tip only once or twice.

You%26#39;re supposed to tip bellmen about a dollar or two a bag, I think, and it is good to tip your maid. I usually do about $5 but we don%26#39;t stay in expensive hotels.

You%26#39;re supposed to tip cab drivers but I have no idea how much, I%26#39;m from a really rural area and have never been in a cab before!

I always tip: 18-20% to a waiter or waitress unless service is bad, 25% if it%26#39;s really good; $1-2 per bag for bellman; 20% in taxi, but sometimes I round that down; $1-2 per day per hotel maid (just leave on dresser when you check out). Those are really the only people I tip. If you use a tour guide who does a good job $5 would be appreciated. If you rent a car and take a shuttle to and from the car rental lot and the driver helps you with your bags, tipping him $1-2 would be nice. Other than waiters and waitresses and bellmen, though, none of these people absolutely expect tips, so you can use discretion based on the level of service you receive

  • Cabin rentals of Georgia

    Hi all!

Have been scanning the internet for weeks looking at cabin websites in the Blue Ridge Mountains and finally decided on CABIN RENTALS OF GEORGIA. Has anyone stayed at any of their cabins? I booked PARADISE FOUND for 5 days for an aniversary trip and am so looking forward to it. Has anyone ever used the in cabin services offered, such as food prep or spa services?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Visiting Atlanta

Hi, will be travelling to the States from Australia from end March to end April. Will be in Atlanta on 4, 5 and leave on the 6th. If anyone has any use tips they would be appreciated. I have read suggestions about catching MARTA. What is the weather like in April.as luggage space will be at a premium I will not be bringing a jumper but can I assume that I could buy one even though summer gear would be on sale.

    Visiting Atlanta

Weather in early April is usually warm -- a cold snap is not impossible, but would be unusual. Warm weather clothing should be fine, though you%26#39;d do well to have a light jacket of some kind, particularly a weatherproof one as there%26#39;s a better than average chance of rain or thunderstorms. Average high is around 21 C, average low is 8 C, but record highs are 10 degrees C higher and lower.

    Visiting Atlanta

Depending on where in the city you are going it can be convienent to use MARTA. Check to see if your hotel has a free shuttle from the airport or if they are within walking distance of a MARTA station. You will also be able to hail a taxi at the MARTA stations if you need to.

Our weather in April is usually warm and sunny with a few days of rain but even that can be unpredictable. Last Sunday we were under 3 - 4 inches of snow and the temp was in the upper 20s (Farenheit) the last few days the temps have been in the 70s during the day and in the 50s at night. You should be ok without a jumper, as the temps in April will start to push well into the 80s. It should be easy to find a jumper if it tunrs out that you really need one. I would certainly recommend bringing a light rain jacket or a small umbrella just in case. Check www.weather.com a few days before your departure to get an idea of the weather situation.

    historic district-priceline

I am looking for imfo on hotels in this area. Has anyone used priceline or hotwire that coould tell me which hotels they use? Thanks

    historic district-priceline

I believe Hotwire only uses chain hotels. I%26#39;m not sure about Priceline.

    historic district-priceline

Virtually all of the big brand hotels participate on Hotwire and Priceline. I am not sure what all boutique hotels participate, but I have a couple of friends who used Priceline to visit Savannah and they ended up getting good deals at the Planters Inn on Reynolds Square.

I got the Marriott on the river from Priceline.

A couple of us got the Hilton DeSoto last year on hotwire.

Check out biddingfortravel to see if they have recent activity

I got Hilton Desoto for an April 2009 stay.

Can you tell me the winning bid?

I%26#39;ve had luck with $70 bids in off-peak times in Savannah. I wound up placing friends at the River Street Inn, the Riverfront Marriott and Staybridge Suites when they visited-- all nice places. I%26#39;d bump the bid up slightly for our season, which is just beginning. I might suggest 80 or 90 dollars? (add about 10-15 in for taxes and there%26#39;s your rate).

Sorry, meant to inform you I used Priceline.

    Lunch- Savannah?

My friend and I will be visiting Savannah in a couple of weeks taking a one day trip from Hilton Head.

Which is the best place for lunch?

We have heard about Uncle Bubba%26#39;s. Do they take reservations? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Lunch- Savannah?

Don%26#39;t waste your short time in Savannah on a tourist trap a la Uncle Bubba%26#39;s (no reservations anyway). Try a true Savannah style place for lunch: The famous Wilkes%26#39; House, 207 W. Jones in the historic district. REAL Southern cooking, served family style, M-F, 11a.m. -2p.m.

If you want to eat BBQ the way we locals do, try Angel%26#39;s BBQ on West Oglethorpe Lane, next to the Independent Presbyterian Church. Spanky%26#39;s on River St. is a fun, casual place known for its chicken fingers since the mid-1970%26#39;s.

SoHo South Cafe on West Liberty St. near Bull is excellent as is the Gryphon Tea Room on Madison Square across from St. John%26#39;s Episcopal Church.

    Lunch- Savannah?

what type of lunch were you interested in? Hamburger, bar-b-que, full meal or quick snack? Pizza or something fancy? Southern Home Cooking? Italian? Chinese? Seafood?

Savannnah has a multitude of places to eat. I am sure that someone will know exactly the right place for you. But you have to give them a clue as to what you like.

    Thanks,

    Southern Home cooking or Bar-b-que.

    (I%26#39;m from Illinois)

Foggy Bottom had some great suggestions.

Looks like we may be there for dinner as well. One of these mentioned might work out great for that too.

Good! I think that foggy had a good suggestion with Mrs. Wilkes for lunch. It%26#39;s probably the best for the ';Southern'; food experience.

I think you will enjoy the section of town that it%26#39;s in too.

Ms Wilkes is open for lunch only. Angel%26#39;s BBQ closes at 6. Grab some bbq and go sit in a square, a great way to enjoy dinner.

while angels bbq is quite delicious, i prefer the sides at wall%26#39;s bbq.

    Thanks So Much!

Unless you%26#39;re dead set on BBQ, I might suggest Zunzi%26#39;s.

Although you%26#39;re not going to go wrong with Angels BBQ or Wall%26#39;s BBQ, either. Both are great.

    Where do the locals eat?

Will be coming to Savannah later next week for a long weekend to celebrate my MIL%26#39;s 70th bday. We will be staying at Zeigler House Inn. Need recommendations of nice dining establishments that have delicious seafood. My MIL does want to eat lunch at Our Lady %26amp; Sons, just because. Otherwise she wants to eat where the locals go for good food. We consider ourselves ';foodies'; so we appreciate the whole dining experience. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

    Where do the locals eat?

Locals avoid The Lady and Sons, it%26#39;s become an overrated tourist trap. Read the reviews in the ';before you go'; column on this site.

You call yourself a ';foodie';, so if you take your MIL to Lady and Sons, ';caveat emptor';.

Be prepared for a long wait in line, just to get your names down for a seat ---no reservations in the traditional sense.

You will find locals dining at the better restaurants:

    Vic%26#39;s on the River --lunch

    Noble Fare -supper

    Sapphire Grill --supper

The Olde Pink House ---lunch is better than supper!

    Garibaldi%26#39;s --supper

Johnny Harris on East Victory Drive, not in the downtown area ---BBQ, lunchtime...still a locals%26#39; favorite, since 1924.

The Wilkes House, which is only a few steps from the Zeigler House...tip: arrive by 10:30 a.m. for the first seating at 11 a.m. Don%26#39;t have a huge breakfast on the day you go. This Savannah institution set the gold standard for Southern cooking.

    Where do the locals eat?

From one foodie to another, I second Mrs. Wilkes---to me, it%26#39;s ';Savannah';! It%26#39;s southern cooking but without all the hype of Lady and Sons. They are only open for lunch and only on weekdays. So, if the line at the other place is just too long, give them a try---you won%26#39;t be sorry!

Foggybottom %26amp; downunder05--Thanks for input! I also spoke to Jackie, the hostess at Zeigler House, earlier today. She suggested several of the places that Foggybottom mentioned. She also added a few more that I%26#39;ve checked out on TA %26amp; other review sites. A few that Foggybottom didn%26#39;t mention that seemx appealing include Cha%26#39;Bella, Alligator Soul, Wassaw Sound %26amp; Sundae Cafe (on Tybee).

In regards to Lady %26amp; Sons, I%26#39;m hoping I can talk my MIL into trying Ms. Wilkes instead. I had heard Lady %26amp; Sons was more of a tourist trap now with long lines but that is one of the few things she has requested to do while in Savannah.

All of the alternate suggestions (Vic%26#39;s, Cha Bella, Mrs. Wilkes, etc.) are good ones. You might also want to try Molly McPherson%26#39;s (Scottish pub food), Zunzi%26#39;s (eclectic), the Olde Pink House, or Sapphire Grill.

  • If you had to choose...

Between The Ballastone, Hamilton-Turner Inn, Gastonian, or The Foley House Inn which one would you favor to stay in. And if neither would be a choice for you, where would you stay.

    If you had to choose...

I don%26#39;t think you would go wrong on any of them, but if you were to list them according to location, the Gastonian would be the one to put on the bottom of the list. It would be the longest stroll to the center of the Historic District.

It%26#39;s still within easy walking distance. And it%26#39;s the closest to Forsyth Park. But it is more inconvenient to places like the Visitors Center, City Market and River Street, if that is important to you.

    If you had to choose...

Thank you for your reply. I will keep that in mind. I%26#39;m leaning towards the Ballastone, but I%26#39;m still undecided.

It%26#39;s very convenient to everything and in a lovely section. I don%26#39;t think you would be disappointed.

We recently stayed at the 1895 inn and couldn%26#39;t have been more pleased. The Ballastone looks lovely from the outside, though.

Thank you madisonmommy123 for replying to my post. The 1895 Inn looks lovey and all 189 people who visited there and posted an review about the bed %26amp; breakfast seemed pleased with the food, accomodations and the hospitality of the host. What more could one ask for. Thank you for letting me know about this gem.

I second the 1895 Inn. It can%26#39;t be beat. The location is pefect, the host is really wonderful, and his home is beautiful.

We stayed there last July and were very happy. We are coming back to visit savannah in april and are staying there once again.

Thank you ampalmer for your reply.

The 1895 Inn wipes the others off the map for its outstanding attention to detail for each guest%26#39;s comfort and surroundings.

I am considering a six night stay at the 1895 whilst work is being completed on my house, it%26#39;s that desirable. If I can afford to do so, I will and not look back....I wonder if locals are given a discount? (just kidding!)

Foggybottom: Wow, that said alot about the Inn. I can%26#39;t wait to experience the gracious hospitality and delicious breakfast everyone has talked about in their post.

Thank you for your input and your reply.

I was unable to get a reservation at The 1895 Inn for the dates I wanted in April. But, I was able to get reservations at Ballastone Inn. I%26#39;ll let everyone know if I enjoyed it. Now all I need to do is figure out plans on what to do and where I should dine.

    St. Patrick's Day Celebration

    Hello,

I will be in Savannah on Friday - Sunday. I know I will miss the St. Pats. celebration. Have anyone heard about the weekend events? Will there be activities on Riverstreet during the weekend of the 13th.

    St. Patrick's Day Celebration

We%26#39;ve got many activities going on this weekend. A few come to mind. This Saturday is Tara Feis, the Irish-themed family festival held on East Bay St. at Emmet Park, overlooking the Savannah riverfront. I think it runs from 11a.m. thru 3 or 4p.m. Free %26amp; open to the public....this is one of the most anticipated events.

Tybee Island, our beach island is holding its St. Patrick%26#39;s Day parade Saturday afternoon....it%26#39;s about an hour or so long. This year the Budweiser Clydesdales will be in Tybee%26#39;s parade. Not sure of the time, it may be 3p.m. I don%26#39;t have my newspaper handy right now or else I could confirm the time.

Go online to www.savannahnow.com the web site for Savannah%26#39;s Morning News.....read the ';Do'; section for a complete listing of the weekend%26#39;s things to ';do';. Today%26#39;s edition carries a St. Patrick%26#39;s guide of all the events this week thru March 17.

The weather should be pretty good this weekend. it is turning cooler, from the low 80s back into the mid to upper 60s, great for being outdoors.

    1st time to Savannah

We are coming to Savannah in June. It will be our first visit. We were thinking of staying at the new Marriott in the historic distric. How far away is this to the visitors center? We had thought about catching the trolley to see things. Also we have 3 days, what are the best things to see in this short time?

    1st time to Savannah

If it%26#39;s the new one that isn%26#39;t open yet, it would be just across the street from the visitors center.

Getting a tolley tour first is an excellent idea.

Since you will have three days, take one day to just stroll from Bay street on the north to Forsyth Park on the south. that%26#39;s a little over one mile, but if you add in taking time to really LOOK at the homes, etc. it would a full day. Go down Bull, then east at the Park for two blocks to Abercorn and then back to Bay on Abercorn. Take time to go in and see the Cathedral of St John the Baptist on Abercorn.

    1st time to Savannah

I would go to Ft Pulaski if you are interested in history, it is also a beautiful place to just walk around, there is a dike/trail that goes all the way around that is a great walk and a trail that goes out near the lighthouse.

While you are out there run out to Tybee beach and have a look around.

    Pet Friendly Hotels?

Can someone recommend a pet friendly hotel in the perimeter/Buckhead area? We are looking for a hotel where we can leave our small dog for dinner and a little shopping. Leaving her home is not an option. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Pet Friendly Hotels?

In Midtown the Hotel Indigo is very pet friendly.... not sure where else.

    Pet Friendly Hotels?

Check that, The Intercontinental Buckhead, Westin Buckhead and W Atlanta at Perimeter Center are all pet friendly too....

    Check out this site:

    www.petswelcome.com

It%26#39;s got about every pet friendly hotel/motel chain in America. You may have to check the individual hotel for confirmation but this will give you a general idea.

Navy Lake Site on Lake Allatoona

Has anyone rented one of the cabins here? What is there to do there besides swimming and hiking? Can you have campfires and go 4 wheeling?

Navy Lake Site on Lake Allatoona

Sorry, never stayed there. have camped many times at Red Top Mtn State Park at Allatoona, but not the navy site, but i am sure someone will chime in.

bumpin you back up to the top.

Navy Lake Site on Lake Allatoona

Found a link to the Navy site

    www.mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/cabin.htm#Georgia

It doesn%26#39;t say anything about fires or ATV%26#39;s but it does list a phone # and other general info about the campground.

I%26#39;ve camped at Red Top and a few Corps of Engineers sites, they both allow campfires and have paved roads but still not sure about the ATV%26#39;s- always see people with bikes and occasionally a scooter or motorcycle.

Wow - thank you so much! You guys are great!

  • MARTA Buckhead station questions

I looked at the MARTA map and schedules and figured out that I can get from the airport to Buckhead station and then walk to my hotel. My hotel is the Grand Hyatt on Peachtree, and from the map it looks like I exit Buckhead station, turn right, walk a couple of blocks and the hotel is on the right. First question: is this correct? I just want to make sure before I go. Also, I will have a small carry on bag with rollers - will I have to drag it up some stairs or is there an escalator at the Buckhead station?

    Thanks.

    MARTA Buckhead station questions

Yes, your understanding is correct. The MARTA station will have an elevator and/or escalator.

Be sure you leave the station at the west exit as there is an exit on the east side of Peachtree St as well that would require you to turn left instead of right and to cross the street. If you don%26#39;t see signage for the exits, just look around you when you get out of the station. If the W hotel is across the street, you got out on the correct side. If it%26#39;s on your same side of the street, you%26#39;ll need to cross the street and head left. The Hyatt is enormous, so you won%26#39;t miss it.

    MARTA Buckhead station questions

Another landmark to look for is Maggiano%26#39;s restaurant, which is quite big. It is next to the MARTA station on the west side of the street, the same side as the Grand Hyatt, but in the opposite direction from your hotel.

    Thanks JAtlanta!

  • Voodoo in SC

Can you tell me where to find the voodoo vestiges in SC?

    Voodoo in SC

    In the fairy tales.

    Voodoo in SC

Are you sure the two of you are from this area? Voodoo is not overt and no one operates a ';store'; or ';shop'; that is a true practitioner....however, just last week as I was driving down Ogeechee Road near Stiles Ave., a fellow who was obviously a ';root doctor'; was standing next to the road. The necklace of chicken bones gave him away. Also, years ago when I lived in Bulloch County, there was a older man who lived on Highway 47 who was the neighborhood ';root doctor';.

Here is the thing, harvardchic82, true voodoo practitioners are not out in the open for the world to find. They only work with family and neighbors, etc. Anyone who says they are a root doctor or voodoo doctor and charges you to stick a pin in a doll is just after your money.

Being a good little Irish Catholic lad, I am not the expert in this area but I think you will run into the voodoo around Frogmore, SC a little village east of Beaufort on the way to Dataw Island.

like cole porter said......do do that voodoo that you do so well. i think i liked it better when harvey korman said it.

    ';Head %26#39;em off at the pass! I hate that cliche!';

Do you know of any real voodoo workers in SC or Georgia. I think there is a spell on me that I need removed? autrellw@gmail.com

    Cassadaga fl

There may be voodoo practitioners in the SC-Ga lowcountry, vestiges may remain within the sea island/Gullah culture but you%26#39;re not going to find root doctors on the side of the road with a sign advertising their services. It%26#39;s not out in the open, if it truly exists.

You%26#39;ll have to travel to Bourbon St. in New Orleans to the voodoo shops, buy some ';spell removers';.

Tybee, St. Simon, Jekyll or Hilton Head?

    Hi,

I%26#39;m coming to the area next month and I%26#39;m very excited! I am spending a few days in Savannah but I have another day and night to spend somewhere else.

Which is my best bet? Is Tybee Island small enough that I could fit it in within the 2 Savannah days and then check out one of the other Islands?

I am a single woman traveller. I like touristy stuff and shopping places. Wherever I go I would most likely rent a bike or scooter to see the most I could in the little time I have.

    Many thanks!

Tybee, St. Simon, Jekyll or Hilton Head?

Yes, Tybee is pretty small and very walkable so if go there, you%26#39;ll have an easy time getting around and seeing basically all of it in 1/2 day. There isn%26#39;t any shopping really, just one high-end gift shop and a bunch of cheap souvenier shops. Tybee is very, very laid back and from what I hear, very different from the other islands you mention which are more upscale and built-up. We are going to Jekyll for the first time in about 3 weeks and based on what we%26#39;ve read and know about Tybee, it%26#39;ll be similar in that its all beach front, some nature, but more shopping and traffic.

If I were you, I would just go to Tybee for a half day trip then drive south to Jekyll or St Simon for an overnight- this is assuming you are allowing yourself ample time to your airport heading home or elsewhere? I know there are bikes to rent on Jekyll but don%26#39;t know about St Simon and I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d care for Hilton Head so hopefully someone else can help you on that end.

Tybee, St. Simon, Jekyll or Hilton Head?

there really isn%26#39;t much to see at Tybee. Since you want to go to one of the other islands, I would skip it.

If you are going to have a car, check out Fort Pulaski, it%26#39;s on the way to Tybee. Then you could spend about 20 minutes driving around Tybee and seeing just about all of it. The Fort is well worth a couple of hours for a quick visit.

Hilton Head is to the North of Savannah, and St. Simon and Jekyll are to the South. Keep that in mind when you are making other plans. Are you leaving the area by air? If so, your best choice might be Hilton Head.

Thanks for the info so far!

Wherever I end up going I plan to be there from a Monday morning and then leaving the area Tuesday morning. I have a flight out of Atlanta late Tuesday night so I%26#39;ll have lots of time to get back from wherever I decide to visit.

I agree that Tybee probably can be crossed off the list. St. Simon%26#39;s is gorgeous but Hilton Head is probably better for a single person wanting a variety of things to do. HH has MANY services; St. Simon%26#39;s not so much but there is a tiny ';downtown'; that would keep you entertained for a day or so. If you want a more quiet atmosphere and don%26#39;t mind the extra drive, go to St. Simon%26#39;s; Hilton Head is very big (it%26#39;s beautiful but busy) and more convenient to Savannah. Also consider Beaufort - it%26#39;s a cute little town and you could take a nice carriage ride, shop on Bay Street, and eat at some fun places on the water and head out to a nice public beach. Beaufort is also known for its rich movie history - lots of Forrest Gump was filmed there as were many other ';southern'; movies. Enjoy!

I would agree with the poster above, Hilton Head and Beaufort are beautiful and there is plenty of shopping in Hilton Head. Beaufort has a lot of history attached to it like Savannah but a lot smaller so that you can see it in a few hours.

I%26#39;ve never been to Hilton Head, but I grew up going to SSI since my grandmother lives there. There is a trolley tour that is really fun, and you can visit Fort Fredrica and Christ Church, tour the lighthouse, there are bike/scooter rentals, and the beaches are okay towards East Beach. There has been a lot of shopping added on the island closer to the Sea Island Causeway, I think the shopping center is called the Sea Island Shoppes...some local shops plus upscale chains. The village has some local shops as well and is situated next to the pier where there are some great places to eat. My faves are:

4th of May for breakfast and lunch (Butter Pecan French Toast is my fave)

Mullet Bay for a drink and bar food

    CrabDaddy%26#39;s for broiled/grilled seafood

    Crab Trap for fried seafood

Frederica House for steaks and seafood

    Moondoggies for pizza

Sweet Mama%26#39;s for ice cream and desserts

Gnat%26#39;s Landing for lunch or dinner

SSI takes about an hour and a half from Savannah down 95, it%26#39;s not a bad drive. Jekyll is just across the water, you can see it from the pier, but it takes about 30 minutes to get over there by car and there is not a ferry, I personally don%26#39;t like Jekyll there is very little to do there.

Enjoy your trip whatever you choose!

    Cokechick,

I%26#39;ve spent time with the family on all of the islands and think HH would meet your needs best. It has the most shopping, the best beaches, lots of trails for riding bikes and is also the closest to Atlanta.

Tybee is an easy day trip from Savannah but you won%26#39;t be missing much if you skip it. If you do go, consider stopping at the Crab Shack for a fun casual meal.

    Have fun.

Thanks everybody. I really appreciate all the advice! I have picked Hilton Head and even managed to get the Westin for $75. It runs high 200%26#39;s so I think I got a pretty good deal! Of course the dollar sucks right now but I%26#39;m still happy.

    Accommodation Help Please!

    Accommodation Help Please!

Gees, no offense, but you must be on a college student budget. There is no straight shot, public transit into the historic center of Savannah that I%26#39;ve learned about yet but hopefully the locals will help you. My guess is that you will need to stay in the downtown area itself which is totally walkable but the area around it isn%26#39;t connected directly to it as far as walkers and public transit tourists might need it to be. Your $60 US is really really on the low end and I doubt that any place will take you for that. Have you checked in with Georgia universities to see if they rent college rooms for that much? Easter is a holiday only for Christians and really isn%26#39;t considered a holiday in terms of hotel fees unless maybe the town is having some giant parade or something that attracts tourists.

I hope for the best for you as this city is truly wonderful but having been there a few times now and having been a pensionne person years ago, this doesn%26#39;t appear to be a hostel kind of town with public transportation to match your needs. I hope you can visit anyway, you will love Savannah!

    Accommodation Help Please!

priceline advertised La Quinta Inn Midtown Savannah for 54.00pn. check w/locals on safety, public xport etc.

You arent going to find anything near the historic district for that price. Most hotels in the area run $200.00/night --- the nasty hotels near the district run in the low 100s/night.

Your best bet is going to be the Midtown locations for hotel/motel. Look for anything on the listings with an Abercorn Street address, and a block number of over 6000. Also, White Bluff Road, Stevenson Avenue, or just MIDTOWN LOCATION. These would all be near or on a local city bus route.

Also would be near inexpensive restaurants and Mall shopping. Midtown is about 4-5 miles south of the historic district so it is not within walking distance of the HD, (or as you call it, ';town';)

I got a hotel on priceline, two nights, the 16th and 17th St. Patty%26#39;s day in historic district for 125.00 so try them.

Experts, how about The Relax Inn for her? I was thinking of staying there myself, so I%26#39;m interested in your views.

It%26#39;s a good bit further out on Abercorn Street than the midtown motels. I really don%26#39;t know if the bus service goes out that far.

Stay just south of DeRenne Ave on Abercorn Street and you will find some good deals. Extended Stay America offers a no nonsense room with a kitchenette.

Publix grocery store is right across the street.

Check www.catchacat.org for local bus routes. I can tell you bus#14 runs up and down Abercorn from early in the morning until late at night for $1 each way. Great deal.

    Cokechick,

For the best hotel at that price I would strongly recommend using priceline. Recent bids for 3* and 3.5* hotels in both the historic district and in the midtown area have been successful below $60 per night.

Use biddingfortravel.com to see what recent successful bids have been and to educate yourself about using priceline.

    Good luck

Thanks for your help guys! I got the Courtyard Marriott Midtown for $45 a night. I would have rather been downtown but for that price I don%26#39;t mind taking the bus. :)

At that hour, I would take a cab. There will be plenty lined up at the airport. Just follow the signs for ground transportation from the baggage claim area, and you can%26#39;t miss them.

MARTA is very convenience and I would recommend it for the rest of your stay, but the airport isn%26#39;t in the best area and I would be worried about the folks who might get on at the stops south of downtown.

april 24th graduation date ft. benning georgia

It is 3-11-09. Rumor has it that Family Day is april 11th but grad date won%26#39;t be until april 24th. That%26#39;s too far apart from each other for a family that has to pay for a trip to travel twice. Rumor is probably just that but would you please confirm that Family Day and Grad Day are only one day after the other? Thank you. Also, won%26#39;t they give enough notice, not by rumor but somehow by mail? Families that don%26#39;t get enough notice end up paying a lot more for travel time. Don%26#39;t forget, it is Easter in April and many families travel with their children because they are off from school during Easter vacation. Is there any offer for families to get discounted travel? Anything you can do to answer would be greatly appreciated. If our family members choose to serve, that is patriotic and respectful but the military should give respect back to the family and solider by organizing efficiently and respectfully as well. Thanks again!

You can type some of your key words in the search box above your question and read previous posts. As far as booking your hotel, remember that just because there is a graduation scheduled on a certain day, doesnt necessarily mean your family member will graduate that day. If they are injured during basic training, become ill, or fail any of the requirements, there is a chance that they will graduate at a future date, so dont book accomodations through a non-cancellable service (like priceline). You should contact the base to get the scheduled date.
