Camping near Savannah -- Skidaway?

I am planning on staying a few days at a campground near Savannah at the end of July 2009. Skidaway sounds nice, but I%26#39;ve heard the gnats are really bad. Can anyone tell me for sure?

The gnats are bad, but that%26#39;s anywhere here. They%26#39;re starting now and will go until it gets cool again in Oct. Use lots of OFF and citronella candels!

Camping just about anywhere in GA with the exception of the mountains can be miserable in July. The sites at Skidaway do have electric so bring some fans and extension cords so you%26#39;ll at least have a breeze.

Otherwise, it is a lovely state park with great hiking and biking trails. Check out UGA%26#39;s marine research center on the Skidaway River while you are there.

Thanks for the advice. I just wanted to stop and see Savannah on the way down to Brunswick for our son%26#39;s graduation from FLETC; otherwise I wouldn%26#39;t have chose July to visit. We will probably forego Skidaway this time and stay inland on the west of Savannah. I%26#39;vd encountered those gnats on Jekyl Island previously.

It does not matter if you stay inland or on on of the islands. That time of year the gnats, skitters, yellow flys, etc will be out in full force. Around here it is a fact of life. The 2 campgrounds off of 95 to the west that I can think of will be just about as bad. There is also a campground on Tybee which is now owned by the City of Tybee that will have the gnats too but may not be as bad as Skidaway. The Skidaway campground is in the woods and by the marsh.

If you stay at any off them get some bug spray with DEET in it. the higher the percentage the better.
