Georgia itinerary

Well we’ve drawn two states out of a hat to visit this year. Georgia got the spring draw. We’ve never been to the south and want to stick to Georgia as much as possible. (next year we just might draw out South Carolina! !) Anyway ….what do you think? Our tastes? Wellllll just about anything. We do love looking at buildings and a flea market is a must. We find that we don’t want the same thing over and over again. Just a good mix of where we are visiting. With that said here is our itinerary:

Wed: Shoot we’re coming from Washington State; it’s going to take all day just to get there.

Thurs: Visitor’s center to get paper work, pick up some water/pop/wine to take back to the B %26amp; B, a long lunch, Hop on and off tour bus with stops at a few places. (Juliette Gordon Low House %26amp; Colonial Park Cemetery?)

Fri: Okefenokee National Wildlife refuge with a picnic basket

Sat: First Saturday @ Riverfront Plaza and a long lunch

Sun: Kellers Flea Market and that long lunch thing, topped off with a carriage ride. (Hopefully)

Mon: Coast Drive. The plan is to go south and work our way up. Start in Brunswick, St. Simons Island, Darien with lunch in St. Simons Island or Darien? End at Tybee Island

Mon: Take a city walk, lunch and Bonaventure cemetery

Wed: Antiquing (Alexandra’s Antique Gallery), lunch

Thurs: Any suggestions on a nice drive to the interior? Other wise we have a long list of other places to visit and things to see: Fort Pulaski, a riverboat tour, Trustee’s Garden site, Wormsloe State historic site, White point Garden Dolphin tour……

Fri: We leave, but not until late in the day. We will stick close to the historic district touring what squares we haven’t walked through.

Georgia itinerary

I would either just skip the Okefenokee or check it out on your way to Brunswick. I think that you will find that there will be other things that you want to see in Savannah that will take up Friday. The Okefenokee is just not worth spending an entire day on since your time is limited. Plus, since it%26#39;s Spring time, the gnats will drive you beserk.

On your way back from Darien, ( I assume you will stick to US 17) Take a little time to visit the little museum house behind the Midway Church at Midway. Check out the cemetery if it%26#39;s open. One interesting thing about this area is that it was settled by people that were unusually short. The furniture looks as if it were for a play house. The cemetery there is also interesting. Between Midway and Savannah is Richmond Hill. Fort McAllister is there. It%26#39;s worth seeing too. It won%26#39;t take long as it is small. It was one of the forts that were erected to protect the colony from the Spanish coming up from the Florida area.

I certainly hope you enjoy your trip.

Georgia itinerary

to aja55: Take a shot at Macon. Three hrs. east of Savanah on I16. Two hrs. south of Atlanta on I75. Never burned by Shermam so our buildings and old homes are original and still standing. Lots of music history. Much smaller than Atlanta or Savannah so you can see it in a day. Spend Thursday night and catch your flight out of the ATL friday evening.

I%26#39;ve been thinking about your coast drive. It could easily take you a full day without Tybee at the end. Think about saving Tybee until the next day and checking out Fort Jackson (war of 1812) and Fort Pulaski on the way out to Tybee. They would be on the way and it would save you some travel time. If you have time, a WWI fort, Fort Screven is at Tybee that has a small museum. That%26#39;s also where the Lighthouse is. I have never been up, but I understand that the view from the top is quite good. Some of the old fortifications at Screven have been converted into homes. Interesting use of what was once just abandoned piles of concrete.

Thanks for the help Aileen and sixseven. We%26#39;re really looking forward to seeing your part of the counry. Only three days to go !
