July 4th Weekend-Ampersand Inn

Traveling to Savannah for our 1st time in July. Would like to stay in the historic district, and would like to stay somewhere with a pool. We are undecided about B%26amp;B%26#39;s-we usually stay at hotels. I did find the Ampersand Inn which looks interesting, however seems to be on the outer edges of the District. Does anyone know anything about this Inn? I found one review from last year in which it states this is in a very bad part of town. We will not have a car so we will rely on public transportation and of course our feet! Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I would agree that this is not a great part of town. It is also a ways from River Street and most of the shops and restaurants and in July that is pretty important.

If you have never been to the south in the summer you have no idea how hot it is. Not just temprature hot but unbelievably humid. When you step out the door it is like walking into a wet blanket. So if you can get where you want to be without walking for half an hour every time, you will be better off.

For your first time here I would suggest one of the big name hotels right in the District. The Hampton, Doubletree or Garden Hotel on Bay St or the Hilton or Courtyard Marriott on Liberty.

This historic inn is located in the historic district. Public transportation (free) is available 1 block from the Inn. Remember this is an Inn, not a B%26amp;B. Their units contain kitchenettes, living room, bedroom, bath. Some units contain Jacuzzi tubs. A small porch and a pool. For the money, you cant beat it. Bad part of town? Since when do criminals limit themselves to the ';bad part of town';?

It%26#39;s a long walk to most of the interesting sites and public transportation isn%26#39;t all that great. While bad things do happen, no matter where you might stay in any city, this particular location is not the best. Have you seen this write up?

If you want an adult theme Inn with exotic and sensual settings, then this might be the place for you. If you are looking for a place that will allow you to get the most out of Savannah, places to eat and shop, you might be hugely disappointed.

The Hampton is in an excellent location and it has a pool.

The Ampersand Inn is deep in the inner city and although public transportation is nearby, the buses don%26#39;t run to and from the historic areas like you%26#39;d need them for touring, etc. You%26#39;d have to transfer from one bus to another to get downtown, and in July, those bus stops in the boiling sun would cause sunstroke! A fine alternative would be the Amethyst Inn at Sarah%26#39;s Garden on Gaston and Habersham Streets...it%26#39;s got a pool and is a Victorian mansion. Great spot, too. Shady and within steps of the Historic District.
