Decent Hotel for July 4th week

My wife and I will be coming to Atlanta from July 1st-July 5th. We are looking for a decent hotel for around $70/night. Nothing fancy, just clean and safe. We are coming to watch the Braves and see the sights. We were last in Atlanta in 2004 around the same time and we stayed at the Days Inn Northwest. It was alright.

Thanks in Advance.

I think your best bet is bidding on Priceline. You can specify the area (I definitely recommend midtown) and price. If it doesn%26#39;t accept your price, you can rebid later (24 hours???) or change the search parameters (3 stars instead of 4, etc). I have friends who consistently bid $65 a night on Priceline for a 4 star midtown hotel and get placed in either the Sheraton or the Wyndham, both of which are very nice hotels that would cost in the $175 range if booked through the hotel.

If you aren%26#39;t concerned about being near public transit or staying right in the heart of the city, I think the Perimeter (Dunwoody) area, which is a 15 minute ride from midtown or 20 minute ride from downtown with regular traffic, is a good option. It is near many restaurants and shops (sort of suburban in nature with lots of chains) and it seems that hotel prices are better. Not as much character as staying intown, but it%26#39;s a very safe area and you%26#39;re likely to get a nice clean hotel room.

I may have mislead you in indicating that Perimeter hotels would not be near MARTA. There is a MARTA station at the Perimeter. It%26#39;s just a more widely-spaced area so you may have to walk further or take a bus or hotel shuttle to the MARTA station form a Perimeter hotel.

Thank you very much for all the info.

Getting a hotel along Peachtree Street on July 4th could be a problem because of the Peachtree Road Race. It%26#39;s a 6.3 (10K) race with 55,000 participants. An unbelievable sight to watch. Walk or run the race if you%26#39;ve trained. If not, the humidity might be a problem. It sends many an unexperienced racer to the hospital each year. It%26#39;s also lots of fun hanging out on the sidelines and cheering the crowd along. All this fun for a t-shirt.

I would stay downtown/Midtown instead of the Northside. I would stay around the midtown Atlanta. You can go to Jocks and Jill鈥檚 in midtown before the game have dinner and they have a free shuttle to the braves with beer included and will take you back to the restaurant. If you are not going to the Braves game on the 4th then you can see the great downtown Atlanta fireworks. You will also be far from the Buckhead Lenox people as well.

ATLPaul makes an excellent point. The 4th of July fireworks show at Lenox Mall draws an enormous crowd that cripples traffic in that area for hours before and after. I would avoid driving in that area at all costs. If you want to see the show, definitely take MARTA. However, you can watch it from the roof of most taller buidings in midtown as well.
