walking Savannah

We are planning to tour Savannah by foot on the weekend of the Homes and Gardern tour. We are thinking of starting at Forsyth Park, and then heading up Bull St., with detours on

Gordon/Taylor,Charlton/Harris,Perry/Hull,

York/State, and finally Congress/Bryan. Is it doable, or should we pace ourselves. We have a tour of the Juliet Lowe on Friday, and plan on hitting River St. and the Market on Saturday. Is there parking at Forsyth? Or can you suggest another place to park a vehicle?

Yes, you can find parking around Forsyth Park.

Go from Forsyth Park, walking around the squares as you come to them, north to Bay. Then East two blocks to Abercorn. South on Abercorn, again going around the squares, until you get back to where you parked.

The detours that you have planned will take you by a lot of very similar row houses. Interesting, but not enough to warrant the time and energy to walk the additional distance. You%26#39;ll see what I mean when you get here. Up in the more commercial sections (north of Oglethorpe Avenue,) you don%26#39;t even have the houses, just businesses and shops. If you see what looks like an interesting area, stop in investigate further.

This walk can take most of the day. Especially if you take time to walk through the Colonial Cemetery, and take a tour of St. John, The Baptist Cathedral. It%26#39;s worth while to take time to check out some of the Art Galleries along Bull Street.

In fact, perhaps, if you have a car, drive the area you plan to walk first. Then, you can pick out what you want to look at closer and what you want to just zip on by.

I certainly hope that you enjoy your trip.

There is plenty of free parking on the street around Forsyth park or a small lot on the south end of the park, accessed from Park Ave.

I agree with Aileen about the route but I think you should also go two blocks west and walk Barnard St. Another nice walk with lots of squares and the new museum at York. Be sure to sit a while in the squares, there is a serenity about it, try it you%26#39;ll see.

This is a city for walkers so you will have a great time.

Thank you both. Looks like you have saved me a lot of time. Any suggestions along the route for lunch. I have heard of the Soho Cafe, but is there anywhere along the route you two have proposed.

And what about the evening, looking for a good meal with a view where we can chat. We have coming together from three states. I am doing the driving since I am in Atlanta.

There are a bunch of places to eat along the way and remember the distance from Forsyth park to the river is only a mile or so. Even if you walk half way back for lunch it%26#39;s not that far.

There is a great little BBQ place just off Bull called Angel%26#39;s BBQ. It is in the lane just south of Oglethorpe between Bull and Whitaker, it is worth looking for for a great lunch.

We have recently tried the bar in the Hyatt called the Vu. They have food from the Hyatt%26#39;s restaurant which is quite good and they have a great deck overlooking River Street, check it out it may be the perfect place for a chatty dinner if the weather is warm.
