Just a simple ride around Savannah

Every now and then, the husband guy and I take a ride downtown to the Historic District of Savannah. We went this morning. The weather was wonderfully sunny, just a little chilly for us thin-blooded Southerners. But judging by the number of people just roaming around in short sleeves, it must have felt warm to some of the visitors. The churches had just finished the morning services and the carillons seemed to be taking turns playing from the steeples. The Azaleas were all over the place and the planting of tulips and other early Spring flowers were wonderful

I am always amazed at the on-going amount of restoration that is going on. There is also a lot of New ';old'; buildings going up. Large buildings are being turning into upscale condos and lofts, but still, everything manages to maintain the older historic look.

There%26#39;s a big hole in the ground where a large, ugly parking garage used to be. There is going to be an underground parking garage with a park at ground level. It should add a lot to that area.

And the People!!!! Just strolling around, sitting in the squares, looking, looking, looking. No one in a hurry, just soaking up the Sun. And yet, it wasn%26#39;t crowded. There is just so many streets in the Historic District to wander around on.

I think I%26#39;m a bit jealous that I don%26#39;t get to see my home town with the eyes of a stranger.

Just a simple ride around Savannah

Just a simple ride around Savannah

Makes me want to go right now!! Actually, We do have to go to Savannah (about a 2 hour trip for us) this week for a doctor%26#39;s appointment. That always stresses us out, and your post just gave me the idea to surprise my husband with a good way to unwind after the appt.

Would you give directions from Candler Hospital, or Abercorn (that is the way we come into Savannah) to the Historic District?

Is there a designated parking area to just stroll the district? I%26#39;m really not sure how many squares it covers. Any suggestions will be appreciated!!! Thank you.

bwj... Ok, take a look at this map. It%26#39;s the main Historic District.

www.savcvb.com/savannah/maps/downtown.shtml

Find Abercorn, it%26#39;s the fourth street from the right. As you can see, it goes all the way to the river. When you come into Savannah on Abercorn, you just continue on all the way north. Bull Street, a couple of blocks to the right, is considered the main street with the prettiest squares.

I assume you know how to get from Abercorn to the Candler Hospital, if not, just take a right at Derenne Avenue, it will be several blocks east on your left. It%26#39;s a BIGGGG bunch of white buildings. To get to the Historic District, just leave Candler and go back to Abercorn.

Thanks for the tease, Aileen. We are looking forward to our trip to Savannah and getting warm too. Spring is here in the northwest but still feeling more like winter. Just a week from friday and we will be enjoying 5 days in the historic district!

Aileen,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my post--yeah, we%26#39;re VERY familiar with Candler; I almost have my car on auto-pilot!! It%26#39;s just that we have not ventured anywhere much but Candler area, when we finsh with doctors we%26#39;re usually ready for home!!!

But your post sounded so peaceful till I really want to be able to do a little ';exploring';. Thanks again for your help, the map is great!!!

Oh, Dear!! It sounds as if the trips to Candler are tiring. Let%26#39;s plan you a tour that won%26#39;t tire your husband more. Go on up Abercorn until you get to Gaston, take a left and go to Bull. Drive North on Bull (circle the squares if you want to) to Bay Street. Go left on Bay two blocks and then you are back to Abercorn. Then you can zip on back south. That will give you an idea of what you could see later when he feels more like taking a stroll.

As you can see by the map, other streets have squares too, but the ones on Bull are the main ones. Traffic driving around the squares have the right away, but don%26#39;t trust drivers on the side streets to stop. They don%26#39;t all know what they are supposed to do (you know....tourists!) and sometimes get in a hurry.

WHOOOOPPS!!! I said turn left from Bull on Bay to get to Abercorn.. NO. NO, Turn RIGHT on Bay. RIGHT. RIGHT!!

Boy am I red faced....I can%26#39;t even tell which is which. I guess the next thing will be that I don%26#39;t know which end is up, and then, I%26#39;ll wait on total collapse.
