I%26#39;m part of a group of about 20 adults bicycling from Athens to Savannah at the end of April to raise funds for a local middle school. This is the 7th year the school has done this ride. Currently, the group ends the ride outside of Pooler and comes into Savannah in the sag wagons. We do this because of concerns about safety entering the city from the northwest. Do any of you know of a reasonably safe bicycle route into downtown Savannah from the northwest? Our plans for this year are set, but it would be great to have some better options for 2007.
Bicycle routes into Savannah
I hope these suggestions will provide you with fresh ideas and insight -
Years ago, I participated in the GASBE ride from Eufala, Al to Savannah, GA
We came to savannah via Pooler.
You may want to consider 1st - where you wish to end the event
2nd - to contact local authorities for police escorts
3rd what day of the week you wish to arrive.
4th to contact locat media
To end up downtown - take Highway 80 straight into the Historic District (Bay Street).
Then take Bay Street East to Jefferson Street. South on Jefferson to City Market - a great place to end (and with out the uneven pavement offered by Riverstreet.
Or, Take Bay Street To MLK Blvd. Left on MLK (north) down to the river. Meet up at Rousakis Plaza for a Congratulatory TOast (Try Tubby%26#39;s Tank house for Great fish, salads and that all-imporatant beer! or Spanky%26#39;s ...
There are many more areas to meet - Forsyth Park or even Lake Mayer, lcoated in Savannah%26#39;s South Side!
Best of Luck
Sue
