I%26#39;ve been reading these Savannah posts, and have finally found the source I%26#39;ve been needing all along. I have surfed the internet so much, my fingers have blisters! Well almost, anyway!
We, (2 ladies), are visiting Savannah in November. We have found a unique place called Laura%26#39;s Cottage. It looks quaint, rustic, and is supposedly haunted. Sounds pretty cool so far. My question is this...does anyone know the story of this property? Would love to know before I lay my head down, or try to, if this would be a ';friendly'; or ';hostile'; visitor?
Also, how safe would you view this location - it is between Columbia and Green Squares? We would use common sense, regarding safety, but do not want to invite trouble by being in the middle of it. The booking agent said it was a good area, but I would like to hear an unbiased opinion.
We love the unique and unusual, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I cannot wait to visit Savannah. Just reading these posts, and how helpful the locals are, makes the anticipation even harder!!!!
Staying in Savannah...
I%26#39;m really not familiar with the Cottage. It is close to the eastern boundry of the Historic District. Check out this map. The Cottage is on the north side of East State Street.

As you can see on the map, it is not within easy walking distance of River Street and the main walking area down Bull Street. In November, it could be quite chilly and windy. I think that for the price, you might be more satisfied with somewhere like the Hampton Inn. At least you would get maid service. You would also be closer to the restaurants. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend walking back to the cottage at night after dinner.
Staying in Savannah...
Thank you so much for the information and hotel suggestion! However, we do try to avoid the hotel route if at all possible. If not the cottage, we would be interested in accommodations along the line of a guest house or apartment. Is there another area you would recommend?
Laura%26#39;s Cottage is quaint but all but hidden from State Street unless you know to look for it. It could be an easy place for a thug to hide at night since the garden in front is dense %26amp; dark, but then you could be perfectly safe, too. Why should 2 women take a gamble in a secluded cottage?
Call the Sea Cabins overlooking River Street. It%26#39;s one of the city%26#39;s best-kept secrets. You can even park at your door.
Would you say the crime rate in Savannah is as bad as the French Quarter in New Orleans? We%26#39;ve stayed there a couple of times.
Thank you so much for your advice, both Aileen679, and dylansmom! I%26#39;ve been reading your posts throughout Trip Advisor on Savannah! You provide wonderful and insightful information! I haven%26#39;t heard from BrianO regarding the original message. BrianO, I wondered if you had a suggestion on it as well?
So nice of you to ask :)%26gt;
I didn%26#39;t know anything about Laura%26#39;s Cottage, it seems like a cool place and just what you are looking for but if you were my sister I would recommend staying a little closer to Bull and Bay Streets.
Two ladies alone, the farther south and away from Bull Street you get the less people, which could lead to trouble. You may have to put some poor robber in the hospital then there%26#39;s all the paperwork.... %26lt;(;
You may look for a B%26amp;B around Fortsyth Park, or the place already recommended by another poster. To escape the chain hotel thing.
That%26#39;s my $.02
Thanks, BrianO. You must know us, because you can believe we would show the mugger no mercy! LOL Laura%26#39;s Cottage sounded appealing because of the ';haunted'; factor, but also because it seemed it would be a good home away from home.
We%26#39;ll be staying 7 nights and we%26#39;re traveling in a sports car, so luggage is an issue. We like to explore, preferably on foot, so we were looking for a central location, haunted, nice, economic, safe, and with laundry facilities. This isn%26#39;t too much to ask for, is it?
I have been in Laura%26#39;s Cottage and there is a fine line between ';quaint'; and ';primative';. Laura%26#39;s Cottage is close to that line.
It is a very small simple 2 room house with a tiny bath upstairs (obvoiusly added much later). I believe it was built in the 1790%26#39;s by Isiah Davenport.
If they charge more than $75 a night, its a great deal....for the owners.
Go with a B%26amp;B like the Azaela Inn or The Senator%26#39;s Gate. Take a photo of Laura%26#39;s Cottage.
Thank you, ExploreSavannah! Definitely seeing a pattern here!! Keep the recommendations coming, %26#39;cause it appears we%26#39;ll be searching accommodations again! I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll have plenty of questions ahead.....
By the way, if you few are an example of the fine citizens of Savannah, it will HAVE TO BE a most memorable and pleasant experience! Much gratitude.
Alright Savannah Experts, I told you I would be back...what about staying on West Jones street? Yeah or Nay?
