My husband and I are travelling to USA in September and not sure how to split our time. We have 10 days to split between Charleston and Savannah and I was thinking one week in Charleston and 3 days in Savannah. Should it be the other way around or maybe 5 nights in each?
How many days required to appreciate Savannah?
Each city has a lot to offer. How you split your time really depends on what interests you, and which city is more ';attractive'; to you.
I think 5 days in either, as a tourist, is getting to be a little much - but I prefer shorter trips. What about adding a day or two in Beaufort, SC (about 1/2 way between the two cities) - it%26#39;s a nice community, but very different from Savannah or Charleston.

I too agree that 5 days in either as a city might be overdoing it depending on your personal interests as tourists. Neither city is huge and both are somewhat laid back- they are NOT like New York City or Boston at all for example! We LOVE Savannah but are now looking at day trips there as future residents not as tourists so the focus is different. The coastline between the two cities is worth visiting so by all means, take the time to drive the smaller coastline roads out around the tidal creeks, towards the nature reserves, maybe pop in at Hilton Head (which I know nothing about except that its resort-busy and they are big on golf).
That being said, if you like to walk, both cities will offer you lots of opportunity to walk and explore the historic homes and eat at many great restaurants. But do plan to drive outside both cities and explore the areas around them.
There are a couple plantations between the two, you could easily spend most of a day here, if you are interested in plants and flowers.

You could also spend a day at Ft Pulaski/Tybee beach. I think 5 days at each could be a very nice relaxing, history filled time.
A trip to the aquarium and ft Sumter in Charleston would also take a whole day. I think you can get a package ticket, see an IMAX movie while you are there. All three are in a couple blocks.
I would think 3 good days in either city would get you a good flavor. You might want to think of a few days at one of the beaches for a change of pace. They range all the way from Kiawah on the high side to Tybee as a more laid back place and the weather will still be good beaches in September.
I agree with what others have posted .... I love both cities but think a week in Charleston is rather too long... 3 nights in each should give you enough time to explore and enjoy them.. Coming from Glasgow you may not have as much interest in Civil War history as some natives do.. both cities have civil war forts, etc. Hilton Head is very developed and golf and tennis focused.. the things about both cities that I enjoy the most are: the historic homes, their gardens, and the food... Savannah%26#39;s historic area is somewhat larger than Charleston%26#39;s... I hope you enjoy both places and have a wonderful trip
