Now that I%26#39;ve got your attention, hello fellow tripadvisors.
We are actually staying in Hilton Head for our Cnd March Break but would like to do a day trip. Our dilemna, it will be either Charleston or Savannah. We are two families, each with a 16 yr old son. So, needless to say, we want to make it fun for the boys too. Any suggestions on what to do if we choose Savannah? Fun things to do? Great restaurants? Etc?
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, BTW, our trip is Mar 7-14, so if there%26#39;s anything going on then, please let us know.
Thanks so much,
D in Muskoka (Canada)
Savannah vs Charleston
16 is a tough age to entertain.
I think they would enjoy Ft Pulaski. It is just a few minutes from the beach so you could do both.
There are little ferries that run back and forth across the river at River Street, that is fun, especially if a ship is coming up the river. The other side is a convention center and hotel, lots of area to run and benches and hammocks for the adults to enjoy the view.
River street is a bunch of shops that are full of kitchy junk and t shirts which kids tend to love.
One eyed Lizzy%26#39;s is a restaurant at the east end of River street has little balconies that seat 4 or so, with a nice view of the river, maybe let the kids have their own balcony, that would be fun.
Not much but all I got right now.
Savannah vs Charleston
Brian: Yes, 16 is a tough age to entertain boys, especially ';mature and well-travelled'; 16 yr old boys, aka, harder to please without offering them to jump out of a plane or something! Both of them are SO OVER Orlando. They want ';experiences'; and ';adventure.'; Now you see our dilemna. Neither of them are into war, history, old war forts, ghosts, etc. Pirates, well, maybe. I think we%26#39;d even be stretching it with a carriage tour.
Thanks for understanding.

You do have a problem. History and old Forts and stuff like that are what Savannah and Charleston are all about.
The only fun thing I can think of for that age boy would be kayaking from Tybee out into the nearby rivers. But I think that you can do that on Hilton Head.
See if you can talk them into Fort Pulaski. It%26#39;s quite a bit different than the usual fort. Let them walk around the moat and see the alligators. If it%26#39;s warm, some will be out sunning. The view from the top of the parapets is awesome and they would have to be very unusually hard to entertain if they were not impressed by the view out over the marshes and the ocean.
Definitely Charleston.....its closer to Hilton Head and there is more to see. I%26#39;ve been to both multiple times......
Actually, I think Charleston is twice as far to Hilton Head than Savannah. Isn%26#39;t it?

Savannah and Charleston are only 110 miles apart on the southeastern coast of the US. Driving time is under 2 hours, using both Interstate 95 and Highway 17/21 near Charleston. I make the trip in about 1 hr and 40 minutes most days. Hilton Head is closer to Savannah than Charleston, but the traffic getting on and off the island is horrendous. Highway 278 is the only road on/off Hilton Head, connecting to the US mainland....you can expect commuter traffic delays, the usual daily bumper to bumper stop%26amp;go traffic. The daily fender-benders or broken down cars on 278 can make a 10 minute trip turn into a 30 minute scream.
To reach Charleston from HHI, go wet on 278 until you hit I-95, enter northbound onto I-95 and follow the signs.
Wow I was way off there...for some reason I was thinking hilton head was NORTH of Charleston.... But really I did manage to find my way to both savannah and charleston. In that case, I%26#39;d go to Savannah because looking at a map now, its way closer to Savannah.
I was going to suggest Charleston for the jail house ghost tour, but you say they arent into ghosts?
How about renting one of those scoot coupes?
amy: I saw the Scoot Coupes for rent in Savannah but couldn%26#39;t find anything like that in Charleston. Do you know if they are available in Charleston? They looked like a lot of fun!
I do know in Savannah that they only allow you to use them in the historic district. So, to rent them for a couple of hours and only in the historic district (when we%26#39;d get out and go to a restaurant or shops, etc) wouldn%26#39;t leave a great deal of time to actually use the things.
Thanks,

I cannot find any of them in Charleston either.
I would just rent them for an hr and ride them thru the historic district in Savannah. Maybe the locals can help. Yall, how big is the historic district?
