From Atlanta to Savannah

I%26#39;m from Michigan. Need to come to Savannah May 6 for daughters college graduation. Airfare to Savannah is quite high. I%26#39;m wondering about flying into Atlanta and driving to Savannah. How long of a drive is it?

From Atlanta to Savannah

Before you consider it, check rates with Air Tran from Atlanta to Savannah. Compare that with the cost of a rental car and gas at almost $3 a gallon. It is about 240 miles one way - without stopping, you can get to Savannah from the Atlanta airport in about 3 1/2 hours.

If you decide to go with Air Tran and buy a round-trip ticket with them from ATL to SAV, make sure you give yourself at least a 3 hour connection in Atlanta between your flights. Air Tran does not have ticketing agreements with any other carriers. If your flight from Michigan to Atlanta is delayed, and you arrive in ATL without enought time to collect your luggage and recheck it with Air Tran, they won%26#39;t care and will make you buy a new ticket for the next flight. Same vice-versa on the going home. Sound rude, but thats how all airlines operate.

From Atlanta to Savannah

A lot will depend on your time. Yes, you need to figure in the price of gas, but you also need to think about time spent at the airports, getting to your hotel and the cost of a taxi to get you back and forth from the airport.

You can easily drive in 4 1/2 hours even stopping for a break in Macon. Unless your daughter has a car and can meet you, you would need to rent a car when you got to Savannah. Taxis and shuttles are available, but a car would come in handy, especially if you would like to look around the city while you are here.

I think I should of said we would be coming down possibly Thursday May 4. Graduation is the 6th. Returning to Michigan May 8th. I%26#39;m flying from Flint, but also checking Detroit air fare. But right now its just cheaper to fly into Atlanta. Thank you for your help.

Check on flying into Jacksonville, FL as well. It is about half the drive and sometimes no more expensive than going to Atlanta.

Jacksonville is a good idea. It%26#39;s only a couple of hours and a much more interesting ride.

I%26#39;m going to be doing the drive from Atlanta airport to Savannah this week because I have a conference in Atlanta but wanted to see Savannah. So I%26#39;m coming a few days early to make the trek. Everywhere I look I see this same comment about how boring the trip from Atlanta to Savannah is! Is it the terrain or that there are no cities along the way?

On the way down, I%26#39;m staying overnight in Macon because I get to Atlanta late in the afternoon. I don%26#39;t mind driving because I think the south is so pretty (was in Atlanta years ago). But now I%26#39;m worried about this ';boring trip';. Can anyone comment? I%26#39;m from the prairies in Canada so I%26#39;m used to boring!! Since I%26#39;ll be driving back to Atlanta in one day, is there a more interesting way back - even if it%26#39;s longer (ie. up through Augusta or something like that?)

There really isn%26#39;t a better alternate route.

Sorry if we%26#39;re scaring you. I used to drive down to Savannah at least four times a year for The Dolphin Project and it%26#39;s just a ho-hum drive. Nothing really exciting. So I usually get a book on tape at the library, which makes the time go by faster.

I usually stop in Dublin for lunch or dinner as they tend to have a pretty good variety of places to eat.

I guess it depends on what you call boring. I rather like it. Of course, my husband does the driving. But there are no bill boards or towns. Very few houses for most of the way, Just nice green trees, with some farm land. If you like to lok at trees, it won%26#39;t be boring.

We%26#39;re talking about I-16 from Macon to Savannah. There are secondary roads that you can use, but it%26#39;s not worth the extra time. I don%26#39;t know how it is right now, but there have been a lot of wild flowers planted in the median along the way in the past. You don%26#39;t have to worry about people pulling onto the roads as most of the secondary roads will go over instead of across.

Sorry that I seem to have ';overtaken'; the original post with my question. I suppose I should have started a new post:)

Anyway, thanks for the feedback on the ';boring'; route. I feel much better now about it all. At least I won%26#39;t expect a lot but I think Georgia has the most interesting trees and foliage so I suspect I%26#39;ll be fine. Also thanks for the tip on Dublin restaurants. Looking forward to it all!! Thanks again.

suer211...if you haven%26#39;t already made reservations I really like the idea of flying into JAX. It is a MUCH easier drive to Savannah and the JAX airport is very user friendly...smaller than Atlanta and on the northern outskirts of JAX so you never touch their traffic. You hop on a mini-interstate to leave their airport and that drops you directly onto I-95 to Savannah.

When we lived in Savannah we used it any number of times flying back and forth to Dallas, and once even for a flight to Cayman. Far preferable to going through Atlanta!

To us, the 2 hour drive was worth the savings over flying into Savannah and I%26#39;d do anything to avoid going through Atlanta%26#39;s airport!
