what should i do when i visit atlanta
The new Georgia Aquarium is a must see. It is the largest aquarium in the world and the only one outside of Asia to have a pair of whale sharks. Check it out at http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/
There is also Stone Mountain Park, east of downtown. It is the world%26#39;s largest exposed granite monolith. On it%26#39;s face is the world largest bas relief sculpture commemorating Civil War souther icons Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis riding across the face of the mountain. There a lots of activities and exhibits to see there. There is a steam train that circles the mountain and a cable car that goes to the top, for a great view of downtown Atlanta. And starting this weekend and running until the start of autumn, at night they have the world%26#39;s largest laser light show set to music and accompanied by fireworks. The website for it is http://www.stonemountainpark.com/
There is also Zoo Atlanta just east of downtown. Some of it%26#39;s highlights are one of the few pair of giant pandas in the U.S.. They are holding their breath right now, hoping that the female Lun Lun is pregnant.
There is also the Ford Tropical Rain Forest habitat which houses one of the most successful breeding programs for lowland gorillas in the world. Adjacent to Zoo Atlanta in Grant Park is the Cyclorama, a museum memorializing the Battle of Atlanta during the civil war. (We lost. Burned to the grounds by Union general Sherman) It is about 125 years old and it%26#39;s centerpiece is a three dimensional diorama depicting the battle on the climatic day that Atlanta fell to invading Union forces. The highlight of the diorama is (you guessed it) the world%26#39;s largest oil painting that encirles the viewers 360 degrees. Check out the zoo at http://www.zooatlanta.org/home.htm
That%26#39;s just for starters. There is lots more to see and do.

I would also add a visit to the Atlanta History Center. It will give you a terrific glimpse into the history of the Atlanta area. Also at the site is the Swan House, a beautiful old home which has a tea room which would make a nice stop for lunch.
If you will have a car, I would also suggest driving about 30 minutes north of Atlanta to Roswell. There are 3 antebellum homes open for tour. Since, as the earlier poster mentioned much of Atlanta was burned during the Civil War, we are very lucky to still have these 3 historical homes. 2 of the homes I believe were built by the original founders of the town of Roswell.
Another good stop while in Atlanta is the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The gardens are beautiful but I really love the Fuqua Conservatory where the orchids are - they are exquisite.
Enjoy your visit!
which month are you coming to visit. a lot of fun things do to in the summer aren%26#39;t quite so hot in the cooler months. however, you will enjoy the climate here i think. also depending upon your age and conditioning you may want to consider hang gliding at tuts mountain paradise north of atlanta in clayton ga.
I would also suggest that you review previous posts on this board, as this is a fairly commonly asked question and lots of tripadvisors have given very helpful information in the past. Also, check the Attractions tab on Tripadvisor%26#39;s Atlanta page, which will decribe the most popular destinations.
