I-75 traffic on Fridays/Saturdays

We are driving to Orlando from Iowa on a Friday. Taking I-75 South. Planning to stay somewhere around Atlanta on Friday night and continue to Orlando on Saturday morning.

How bad will traffic be on Friday night and Saturday morning? We were thinking of staying North of Atlanta on Friday night and leaving about 7-8 AM Saturday morning. Is this a bad plan????

Shouldn%26#39;t be any problem unless there%26#39;s (a) a major event going on downtown, (b) a major accident of some kind, or (c) construction delays. Impossible to know about (a) without knowing the specific date, but you could check the web site for the the Atlanta newspaper (ajc.com) in the days just ahead of your trip to see if there%26#39;s anything that might be a factor. You can find out about construction delays (and to some extent anticipated delays for events and such) at the Georgia DOT%26#39;s web site, http://www.georgia-navigator.com. You can also find out about current conditions any time by dialing 511 from anywhere in GA.

Nothing much you can do about (b) in advance -- just have to take your chances (and check the web site/phone number above if you can on your travel day) with the rest of us. I%26#39;ve rarely seen major accidents that cause significant travel delays during early morning hours on weekends -- they happen, but not often.

There is construction on I-75 south below Mt Zion Road (McDonough area), not sure if they are working on weekends too, but I know that it makes for a miserable afternoon drive in that direction right now. I think it is a good plan to stay north of atlanta and head south saturday morning. If you do not have access to a computer, you can listen to 750 AM in your vehicle, they give traffic reports every 8-10 minutes. Friday rush hour begins around 3pm in the immediate downtown area, and then expands outward from there. If you stop in the Barrett Parkway Area (near I-75 - I575 intersection), further north than that, or Marietta to the south, you should be OK. I wouldnt go any further south than that unless you get to atlanta very early Friday; in that case, I would get south of atlanta and spend the night.

Our Garmin has live traffic updates, so should be good there. Also have a Blackberry.

Thinking of staying in Marietta area. Not sure we can get much farther than that with a 3 and 12 year old!

We are heading down the first of May.
