Need hotel assistance

I am traveling to Atlanta in October. I am attending an event at the Hilton downtown (Courtland Street) and do not want to stay there. Appears they are renovating and the only review on TA is a bad one.

I want an upscale hotel as near to Hilton as possible. Can someone make a recommendation?

Also, I have never been there and will likely get a car and have an extra day or two. Any suggestions on must do%26#39;s while there appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

Based on the sticky from JAtlanta (thank you :-)

looks like we may want to stay in midtown. Can someone tell me about how long to travel by Marta from midtown to downtown hotel?

I like the Marriott Marquis which is downtown.

Atlanta Marriott Marquis is across the street from the Atlanta Hilton and the Hyatt Regency is across from the Marriott Marquis... hotels are back to back.

The travel time from any of the Midtown-area stations (North Avenue, Midtown, Arts Center) to Peachtree Center Station (closest to the Hilton) is less than five minutes. Train frequency on each of the two routes that serve these stations is every 10 minutes during peak times (6 am to 9:30 am and 3 pm to 7:30 pm), every fifteen minutes off-peak, and every twenty minutes all day on weekends -- note that there are routes operating on a similar schedule, meaning that in any 10 minute period during peak hours (for example), there should be two trains that pass (North-South and Northeast-South), either of which will work for you. So in addition to the actual travel time, you should allow up to 5-10 minutes to wait for a train during peak times, up to 15 minutes off-peak, and up to 20 minutes on weekends.

I believe if you are going to the Hilton from Midtown, you would get off at the Peachtree Center Station. It is a short ride on the train from Midtown (like less than 10 min on the train). There are a few hotels close to stops at North Ave, which is on the edge of downtown going towards midtown. Hotels like Georgian Terrace and Hotel Indigo are 2 I can think of. There is also a stop at 10th Street. That one has 2 hotels right there. Hotel Midtown and Regency Suites are a very close walk. I am not sure how those particular places rate. All that being said, the Marriott Marquis is a nice hotel and very close to the Hilton if you wanted to stay downtown. Of course there are many other hotels in the area, but those are just a couple I could think of in a very short distance to the station.

Since you said upscale: the Ritz, the Ellis, and the W hotel is nearby (look at second page of hotels on the link provided)

Thanks to all of you for the assistance!!!

For upscale hotels downtown, I would look at The Ellis, Twelve, or the W downtown, with the W probably being the nicest. The restaurant there, BLT Steak, is simply fantastic.

Midtown%26#39;s upscale hotel selection isn%26#39;t as good, though it%26#39;s improving. My first pick would be the brand new Palomar, which opens in April. I haven%26#39;t seen this one yet, but I love Kimpton hotels. Also, there is the Four Seasons, which to me is a bit stuffy and overdecorated. Also, there is a Twelve Hotel at Atlantic Station, but that will require you to ride a shuttle to MARTA and will add to your trip time. A Mandarin Oriental and a Loews hotel are planned for midtown, but I don%26#39;t think either will be open by the time of your trip.

In Buckhead, you have lots of options. The St. Regis will be open by then, and it should probably be your first choice. There is also a nice new W, and the Intercontinental is quite nice as well.
