Not familiar with North Georgia at all and looking for a nice place to stay on the way to Greensboro, SC. We are taking a roadtrip to visit Furman University with our son and would like to find a clean, scenic place to stay along the way in Georgia or maybe North Carolina. To be near a river or lake would be nice. Any suggestions are greatly apprecited. Thanks!
Pls recommend favorite North Georgia towns to visit. Thnx!
OOOppps! Made a typo mistake, I meant Greenville, South Carolina, instead of Greensboro, SC.

Unfortunatly, your route (assuming you are taking I-85 the whole way), will not really take you through any of the great mtn towns (unless you detour). If you are a shopper, there are a couple of outlet malls at the Commerce GA exit.
The dam at lake hartwell is pretty interesting to visit, you may also look at some of the state parks that you might come close to along the way:

If you take a little detour up toward Clayton and Dillard you can go over the mountains to Highlands, NC. It is very scenic.
Go up 575/515 to Blue Ridge, Georgia. From there, you can go through Hiawassee and Clayton, Georgia and through Westminister, South Carolina enroute to intersecting with I-85 east to Greenville.Blue Ridge is a mountain ';resort'; community with lots of cabin rentals, lakes, rivers, mountains, etc. It is an antique/nicknack shopper%26#39;s mecca. There is a scenic train as well.
I%26#39;d make the trip there directly on I-85 then take another more interesting route home ... through Highlands, NC down to Dillard, Clayton, to Clarkesville, Cleveland to GA 400... I don%26#39;t know your son, but a kid that age might find this boring good luck
Thank you very much for your great advice!! We%26#39;ve made reservations to stay at Mitchell%26#39;s lodge in Highlands, NC. We%26#39;re both really looking forward to our trip. I appreciate your help very much.
