we are planning a family vacation for the summer. One of our choices is Georgia. We are wanting the best of 2 worlds...we would like the good clean beach atmosphere as well as the opportunity to tour and view historic and plantation sites.
We are a family of 5. My kids are 21, 15 and 8.
Is Georgia a place to consider?
Someone else had mentioned Myrtle Beach...but I havent researched anything enough to know much about that spot either.
vacation??
Well you have to keep in mind that General Sherman burned quite abit of our history back in the 1800s, if you are expecting to find ';Gone with the wind'; you will be disappointed. But you can find some pockets of what you have described near the ocean. Savannah and Charleston offer the plantations but are not beach-front. You could stay at Tybee Island or Hilton Head Island for the ocean and drive to either city for the historic.
I am not a fan of Myrtle Beach because it is hard to find a decent hotel that is not 30 years old. But a new amusement park has opened there. There is little to do otherwise.
I think the best of both worlds would be for you to see if you can stay at an antebellum B%26amp;B in savannah or charelston and drive to the beach, but doing it the other way around would also work.
If you have any interest in wildlife, you could stay in an antebellum inn on Cumberland Island, and be away from everything except wildlife:

vacation??
I would suggest staying in Hilton Head for the Beach, it is very clean and nice w/ lots for kids to do. Then you can take day trips to Savannah or Beaufort SC (30-45mins away). You could also opt for charleston
